Exaust Gas Recirculation
I pulled the codes P0401 and P0402. Everything I read here lead me to believe the DPFE sensor was to blame. I replaced it and reset codes this morning. By the end of the day, my check engine light illuminated once more and I was stuck with just the P0401 code this time. Does anyone know what else could cause this?

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
How many miles? Maybe clean the egr hole on the uim out, I know mine was pretty dirty when I just cleaned the uim. If it's blocked I guess it could throw a code.

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
My engine has 163,000 miles on it, so I'm guessing I might need to clean the throttle body? From what I can tell, the previous owner did not keep up on maintenance as well as they should have. This picture says it best. I don't think the car idles roughly. It starts out at about 1250 RPMs and gradually drops to 1000.

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
Yeah I'd Definetely Clean Out The Egr Ports Under The Tb And With That Many Miles You Outta Sea Foam It...you Should Also Take The Egr Valve Off And Clean It Out, If Not Replace It.

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
Yeah I was going to sea foam it but I just changed my oil so I was going to wait until my next one. Should I just clean under the TB or go for the whole nine yards described here?
And what does this code mean in terms of the operation of the EGR system? I have a safety inspection coming up soon and I don't know if it's something they check or not. |

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
Go the whole nine yards. Seafoam won't do much with as much gunk as you're likely to have built up.
The egr port isn't really underneath the tb, but more around. If you take the tb off, you would see an indent going around the tb hole, which leads to the egr. The brass pipe underneath the tb goes to the pcv valve.

Re: Exaust Gas Recirculation
You'll be fine. You may want to order new gaskets.
