wear marks on belt ?

I noticed my belt has some wear that looks like the top of it has been rubbing on something and leaving a brownish mark along the 1/2 closest to the engine. I plan to change it out anyway since it's still the original 8+ year old, 100,000+ mile belt, but would like to know if there's something I should check as to why it might be rubbing somewhere.

Re: wear marks on belt ?

Yeah - look for something with a bad bearing, such as the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, idler, etc. - i.e., something that has a lot of play in it. My belts on the camper did something similar, and I saw that but it didn't register what I was looking at, and shortly thereafter the water pump failed badly - there was a TON of play in the bearings. Obviously the Duratec's water pump isn't run off the main belt, but everything else is.

Re: wear marks on belt ?

Those big wiring harness plugs on the rear valve cover have a REALLY close tolerance there; make sure they aren't saagging and making contact.
