My impression is that you aren't very knowledgeable about cars. I would not suggest starting with a tranny swap.
I understand it's a HUGE undertaking, but since I'll probably end up selling the car for much less than I payed for it or parting it out, I don't see what I have to lose. It'd be worth it just for the experience. I've always liked the mechanical aspect of cars but have never really had the chance to dive into one.

Re: Wash my hands?

Without the help of friends with at least small knowledge about cars, i wouldnt do it.
You say now that it may be worth the experience but trust me, its no easy task. (its worth the experience alright... ill never do it again.)

Again, if you have no one to help you with this, dont do it.

Yeah. I've done quite a few repairs on my vehicles alone, and I wouldn't even consider tackling an engine or transaxle swap.

Since you're in Virginia, I would suggest contacting DanG (he's in Virginia as well) and asking him what he'd charge you to do a transaxle swap. Dan has pulled dozens of engines from Cougars and Contours, and I've seen him pull an engine inside 3 or 4 hours. And you'll be there helping, so you'll learn a ton of stuff about cars in general and this car in particular.

Re: Wash my hands?

I shot a PM to him.

Does anyone know if it's at all possible that the TCC solenoid is at fault?
