HELP!! tie rod problem

I'm attempting to take out my stock springs/struts and replace with some H&R springs

Here's the problem:

when i was unbolting the steering tie rod from the knuckle, the bolt and threaded rod sheared off even with the knuckle so know the tie rod is still connected and I have no way of poping it off as the bolt that was supposed to be removed has been sheared off along with the threaded rod it was connected to.

i guess i'm asking for suggestions as what to do next? I believe i've removed all the other necessary bolts in order to remove the strut but only this tie rod problem needs to be resolved in order to have the clearance needed to actually pull the strut out.

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

If it has been "sheared off", a few hits of a large hammer should do the trick. Hit the knuckle as hard as you can. The tie rod should come loose. You can also use a tie rod separator. If you use this tool, you should replace your tie rod, as it will ruin your boot.

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

Jam a crowbar under the tie rod end somehow, and put upward pressure on it. A LOT of steady upward pressure. And as you are holding that pressure, take a hammer and whack the knuckle boss right where the tie rod sits. It will pop out after a few hits.

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

oh alright i'll have to try that in a few. so i'm guessing that there is not a thread pattern inside of the knuckle but only on the rod and bolt? ...so this way it should just pop out with some upward pressure....

thanks for the info!

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

The stud is tapered - it's thicker at the top than it is at the bottom. There is no thread.

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

ok so hopefullly this is my last delay in this install... since I sheared off that bolt, I need to replace the outter tie rod. I was able to remove the tie rod from the nuckle but now I can't remove the outter tie rod from the inner tie rod. (i've used about a can of PB blaster and torched it as well..)

the struts are out and I just need to put on the new tie rod before I put everything else back together.

is there some trick i'm unaware of? I'm sure somebody has replaced their outter tie rod before so please give your input!

thanks a ton!

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

You have to back off the nut on the end. Once that is loosened the tire rod will come off

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

They can get seized on there; Ive seen tie rods that won't move, even after the jam nut is backed off. You just gotta get creative with the force. A pipe wrench is a good thing to use to hold the inner tie rod still while you wail on the outer tie rod.

Re: HELP!! tie rod problem

hmmm.... yeah i've been using pipe wrenches but it still wont break free. i'm thinking the next best option would be just to remove the inner tie rod along with it? i've searched but didn't find much on how to remove the inner tie rod, as i'm not too familiar with how the tie rod hooks up to everything..

Is the outter tie rod threaded so right is loose and left is tight? ..just trying to figure out why the thing wont budge.
