engline light comes on when low on gas

hey i just got a 1999 cougar 2.5 and when im low on gas the engine light comes on and when i put gas it goes off does any one know why?

That's a pretty weird phenomenon. Stop by Advance Auto Parts; they will read your codes, free of charge.

Stupid Canada...

You should post in your local chapter, and see if there is anyone nearby with a scantool. Or depending on how much places charge to read codes, you can always buy a cheap scantool of your own.

ya that true lol and your right stupid canada the states has everything every performance part you want any thing lol ford charges 175 dollars to hook it up to a computer

That is very strange. My first thought would be something wrong with the gas cap/evaporative emissions system... But yeah, get the code pulled before you go replacing parts.

it wouldent be the gas cap i just got the car emissions test and it passed and it need a gas cap i put it on and when im gettin low on gas it comes on and when i fill up it goes off it odd

Well could be a lean condition. if its low on gas it could be letting a little air into the injectors or just sending less fuel to them. Also heard if you're fuel filter is kinda stopping up it would throw a lean condition also.

are you sure its not the little light by the gas guage when you get under 50 miles left on the tank??
