hi there, new here, problem with the cougar

its my buddies car actually. its a 2000 cougar v6, its having an electrical iussue and i was wondering if anyone here has some insight on it. there are a few things that i'll list and when they occur

1. the lights pulse constantly when on the gas but go back to normal off the gas. just got a new battery yesterday.

2. once in a while the battery light will flash and randomly the car will lose all power and die, could be parked idling or driving, its a random thing

3. the factory alarm light pulses constantly and is always on. when that started, the keyless entry stopped working, happened yesterday after getting the battery put in.

i'm thinking for the above 3 it may be a short or a bad battery cable? the alternator was tested and found to be charging fine. i read somewhere on here before about a fix for the lighting issue but i couldn't find it again?

4. the abs and brake light is always on, when the lights turn off the abs system kicks in all the time, its weird. that one is random as well. i'm thinking a wheel speed sensor?

5. the sunroof but i know about that one, lol

if anyone has insight on these issues that would be awesome, i've lurked around here before because i was interested in the cougar. anywho thanks for looking! and i appreciate any help i get so i can this cat back on the road safely for my buddy!

Re: hi there, new here, problem with the cougar

have you had a chance to pull any dct codes?? as for the lights my 01 cougar had a problem like that i check all the ground and i replaced the ground to the battery have not had the problem since.

I beleive that year uses a brake senser so you might need new bake pads cause i might be trigering the abs

PS if you get a code reader to pull the dct codes their is a special protacol it needs to have in the code reader for it to work found that out the hard way if you do some research you can find out which protocol it is

How To: Fix dimming lights/gauges

this thread explains the fix for dimming lights, I have done this fix and it worked miracles!!....We did not have to move the y-pipe either. Some people say they have removed this, try to avoid if possible, it really sucks and you will more than likely end up replacing your stud bolts for the y-pipe.....I have not had the problem, since...keep an eye on the alternator as well!

honestly, you have to give it a bit of time before you can expect some of us to analyze what you are asking and then answer. waiting 12 hours and expect all your questions to be answered is a bit lame.
Also, there is a thing called a search button. I would start there before asking multiple questions.

Charming...

ABS is directly related to the electrical issue. The ABS system takes a TON of juice to self-test and operate, so if you have low voltage, your ABS will throw a fit.

Re: hi there, new here, problem with the cougar

The tests that shops do of alternators do not detect the way our alternators fail. I'm going to add that to the FAQ (though I'm not sure if anyone actually reads it).

And, nick, don't insult the people you're asking for help. You waited all of 18 minutes for a reply. We don't sit at the computer waiting for people to post new problems for us to solve - we'd rather be out driving our Cougars.
