Well, it's a sporty car, with decent road feel, so you are going to feel the bumps in the road. That's just the nature of the beast. It's also why I don't drive my Cougar as my everyday car - some days I feel like it's beating me up - we have some very bad roads around here.

But four different tires is bad for the differential (well, two different tires on the front, I mean). Having that would make me wonder if other maintenance items were not handled well - you could have some suspension stuff that's shot, making it much worse than it should be.

even lowered with low profile tires, mine rides pretty smooth. Only really feel the bumps if on a rough road - then attempt to avoid as many of the bad spots as possible - but every day driving on 'normal' roads, it doesn't ride rough at all.
Like skater said, likely has some worn suspension.

I don't think different brands would be bad, as long as they are all the same size.

Yeah, same size is key, but I'm sure there are slight differences even there; if nothing else they'll almost certainly wear differently. It's best to have two tires of the same age and model on the drive axle of any car.

But more to the point - when I see different tires on a single axle without a good explanation, I start checking all of the other maintenance things. It's an indicator of potential other problems.

Quite possible. It is definately a sign that previous owner had a minimalist approach to maintenance.
