alternator gone bad?

i was sitting at a stoplight and smelled something that almost smelled like a clutch (my cars a atx) , i thought it was the car in front of me or the one in front of him but when i got to mcdonalds for a coffee i realized there was smoke coming from the hood

so i quickly jumped out and looked the smoke was coming from the alternator area.im guessing maybe the alternator? but the cel didnt show, then later the battery light came on for a minute then went back off? any help would greatly be appreciated!

It's not often that our alts go up in smoke.

My first thought would be that the belt got stuck somehow, possibly due to a bearing (in the alt or another accessory) going bad.

I would agree with Skater, but I have had my alt lock up on me before while driving. I wouldn't rule it out totally. You won't get a CEL when your alternator goes.

well thanks for the info and, it was the alt. it completly went out today .time to spend more of the green i dont really have
