Automatic problem?

Im not sure if its been posted yet but I cant find it. I just got an 99 auto cougar this weekend. When I drive it it seems to rev really high before it shifts. Its not all the time tho but very often. Its not like I have it floored. Usually if I'm just driving around 25mph it wont shift till about 4500rpm, but when i turn onto a 45mph road and have to step on it a little it gets up to about 6000rpm before it does shift. I was told it might have to do with my O/D but its still the same on or off. I don't know if this is normal or if something it wrong?

Re: Automatic problem?

4500rpm does seem a little high, When I drive around town mine shifts at about 3000rpm is im granny driving it, if I drive normal it shifts around 3500rpm-4000rpm. If you get on it a littel bit it wont shift till over 5000rpm. If you floor it, it will shift at 6500rpm-7000rpm. All this is with OD on. If its off you rev higher before you shift becasue it basicly turns off 4th gear.

I would say to change your tansmissions speed sensor.
Part Needed: 1S7Z-7M101-KA (Turbine Speed Sensor) - $15 at FordPartsOnline.com
Its cheap and easy, and most problems with our ATX start with it. All you need to do to replace it is pull off the drivers side wheel and you can see it right there on the side of the trans. Its plastic and has one bolt holding it on. Just swap it for a new one.

They talk about it here

of course the cougar needs a certain one, Its a sensor in the trans, the part is for a cd4 trans. So any other card with a cd4 trans would work, like a contour.

You can get the part from teamfordparts.com like linkman posted or from your local ford/mercury/lincon dealer. Its only $15-$20 and many people have problems with their's so its worth a try.
