Hey Everyone!
I'm sure you are sick of hearing about everyone's transmission issues with their cougars but I have searched the forum and I'm kind of fed up looking through tons of posts about transmission problems. Well this is what I have... 1999 Cougar V6 A/T with 103,000 miles on it... ![]() Well my issue is intermediate but mostly shows up at high RPMs and continues for the rest of the drive after the problem begins. I'll be driving my car at a steady pace (around 35 mph) on a flat surface and as I watch my tachometer bounce up and down very quickly for a few minutes, I can feel my car upshifting and downshifting extremely rapidly along with mis-shifts and high revs without it upshifting. It feels like I loose a lot of power from my car and I'm afraid that my transmission will seize up or something. The transmission was flushed at a dealer at 99k miles and the fuild is full and red. There isn't a burnt smell either. I'm looking to set up this cougar for (friend vs friend) street racing in my area but with these problems, I'm not going to get anywhere. I do not have a CEL on and no other lights are on while driving and the lights do work. This problem is ittermitent though becuase a good portion of the time it shifts like butter. I'm looking to do whatever I can to get it fixed within reason. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate anyones opinion on this issue! ![]() Thanks! Big Ross |

Just a quick thing to check - is the overflow tube blocked?

Re: Transmission Issue :-/ (oh no not another one!)
Ok, the overflow tube doesn't seem to be blocked but I cant see anything that would block it. There looks like there maybe a a little bit of some sort of fluid drainage where the tube connects to the transmission but I can't get in there good enough to determine what type of fluid it is. I looked at the dipstick on the tranny while the engine was off and it showed the fluid to be about a half an inch above the "Do not fill above this". The last person to fill it was a dealer and I will go out and check it when it is running at some point soon.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate your time! |

I do hear that the wrong fluid or fluid used for the car that is not recommended by the manufacturer could cause such problems... Hey... You never know... Accidents happen.

http://www.newcougar.org/forums/imag...lies/smile.gif Got it fixed. It looks like only had to change the TS sensor . Not to bad take out battery box around fuse box , then work under rad. hoses . Alignment is easy on new unit the fine line is neutral ,I added some white-out wiped line to define it better .Maybe two hour job.

Re: Transmission Issue :-/ (oh no not another one!)
Unfortunately the best solution is to have it pulled out and checked before it causes more serious damage. Could be anything from a sensor, torque convertor or worse.
The ATX's seem to like dying around the ~100k mark.

Re: Transmission Issue :-/ (oh no not another one!)
What is your speedometer doing when this happens? I'm wondering if *maybe* your VSS is acting up. That might be something else you'd want to check as it causes major problems on the ATX. The computer uses data from the VSS to know when to shift!
