Re: Brake Lights Dont Work

My brake lights have also done this. They are not currently working, and I also replaced fuses, brake light bulbs and the switch. I was also told it was the wiring. If you find out anything else about yours let me know! maybe we can figure it out together.

Re: Brake Lights Dont Work

If you can't get the module, a wiring schematic, can't read one, or have the tools to test and back probe the circuit, you're better of just letting a shop or dealership do this... Without those things, both you guys are going no where really fast.

I strongly think you need a wiring schematic... If you can fix this problem yourself, it's most likely going to require a wiring diagram...

So that would mean that the problem has to be before they go into the turn signal switch since BOTH brake lights do not work. Am I right in my thinking? Thanks for the dashboard info Dr3w2k5.
This has nothing to do with your signals.

If your thinking about replacing a wiring harness that's going to be alot of money and a lot of pain in the ass work not to mention a dumb choice...

The left and right brake lights as well as the 3rd brake light would share a common circuit since it'd be a parallel circuit...

Which would all be on one wiring harness.

If you have a wiring issue before the wire splices off into three (1 for the middle brake light 1 for the left brake light 1 for the right brake light) or where the wire contacts ground all three lights wouldn't work. Could be a wire... Could be the module. Could be a corroded or disconnected ground. That's exactly why all three brake lights wouldn't work.

Are you sure your third (middle brake light) isn't out as well? It most likely is.

You need a wiring schematic... You should take this to the shop. I'm guessing you don't have the knowledge to do this yourself.

It's a wiring issue... Trust the shop on this one. Why is that so hard for everyone? They have more tools than you. Stop replacing this other nonsense... You're wasting your valuable time and money.

And if you live somewhere where it snows and they put down salt you could pretty much gurantee this problem is due to corrosion...

There is no more to solving this problem... The shop already has... Case closed. You now have to pay up unfortunately... :-/ Driving without brake lights is unsafe to you and other drivers, and is and offense worthy of a ticket.

I never said that it had anything to do with the turn signals. I was asking if the wires split to each one of the brake lights AFTER going through the turn signal switch. Also, YES, the case is closed that it is a wiring problem but If I can fix the problem myself, why would I take it to a garage? That's why people post their problems on here isn't it? Thank you everyone for the help, unfortunately I am going to have to take it somewhere to get fixed.

The brakelights don't go through the turn signals at all because the brake lights would flash when you turn on the signals... Unless our cars are set up like this... I haven't really looked. But they use to make the brake lights got through the signals on older cars... So the brake lights were the signals too...

You can't fix it yourself, unless you can get a wiring diagram. That's what I'm saying... I'm not trying to be mean, but you're really helpless without one.

People post thier problems here to try and see if anyone had the same problem. Not really to get the problem diagnosed... It's so hard to diagnose problems over the internet when you can't hear, feel, or see the car...

What advice is given should be taken with a grain of salt. One man's root cause of the problem isn't always the other's... But we can share our experiences and hopefully pinpoint you in the right direction (or close to it).

Re: Brake Lights Dont Work

sorry im not sure what switch theyre reffering to, but I had this same problem with my low beams, sometimes theyd work and sometimes wouldnt turn on. The problem was the chip that most of the wireing goes through. It wasnt the chip rather, but the wires that connected to it were burnt out, so theyd lose contact sometimes. I had to cut the wires off and solder them directly onto the chip. The chip is in a grey box found under the steering wheel - right next to the fuse box, on the left side. I believe it should just slide out and then you can just simply check whether thats the culprit or not..

That's irrelevant... You're problem is with your low beam lights... His is with the brakes lights... Different areas...

yeah BUT the low beams arent the only ones runing through the chip, there are probably about 20 pins on it if not more... if hes not finding what the problem is it wouldnt hurt just to check it, if you can locate the grey box that the chip is in it literally will not take longer than 60 secs to check it... just a suggestion... =\

Re: Brake Lights Dont Work

Had similar trouble two years ago on my '99 . Found melted connection on plug of "lights out" monitor under dash by fuses had to pull wire out solder bypass around unit. Was easy to see melted plastic hot spot.
Some are calling this a chip also it does monitor all bulbs and lamps
