Re: Killing Optimas

I might be asking an obvious question here, but you do DISCONNECT the optima when you store it don't you? I've stored mine 3 years in a row now and it starts right up once I reconnect the battery. In fact last time before I put my engine back in I got a few DVD movies out of it after 5 months of storage and it still started the car.

Re: Killing Optimas

I thought that was what was soo great about Optimas, that you could fully drain them, then fully charge them without damaging any cells???

He's got to be doing something brutal to them to be killing them if there is in fact something wrong with the Optimas. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere?

Re: Killing Optimas

yes it was disconnected, I got a brand new one again! I might not be storing it anymore so it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Killing Optimas

I have had my yellow top sitting in my room for 2 years.....toook it out last month, charge it up, and the battery test yeilded a constant 13.5 volts....must be bad luck.

....Allthough.....my car kills one motorcraft battery per year. Last year I even brought the battery into the house.

Re: Killing Optimas

I'm on my 3rd one as well on the Coug.... I always disconnect the positive terminal when the car is parked and it always starts immediately later regardless of how long its sitting..

I learned my lesson on the other 2 that they don't like being drained at all... if you have anything that will pull current it will effect it...

Re: Killing Optimas

what about a battery tender?

Lots of people who store stangs n vettes use them so their battery won't be drained and no longer usefull.

Re: Killing Optimas

RETRO BUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My red top keeps dying while its stored so I took it back to advance auto and they tested it and it passed fine...I may end up unhooking the positive but the only thing pulling juice is the damn alarm I can figure...If I don't wanna unhook the battery and hook it back up every other month will a battery tender work?

Anyone have one?

I was thinking about just getting the battery tender JR and leaving it plugged in all year. It says its safe for GEL batteries
