I wish some of these people would put the political correctness aside and just come out and say "Yes, I've smoked pot, and I want to legalize it because everyone under the sun has some sort of thorn up their ass about it for no reason."

dude totally looks like a pothead dude
Oh, there's a reason. Several actually. The unfathomable amount of money that has been spent on the war on pot. Political doctrine from mid 1900's. The thousands of people that have pot-related felonies tied to their names, many of whom are serving time. It's a pretty big mess to clean up that makes all the legal crap that has the whole Gitmo shutdown at a standstill look like a hotwheels car parked next to an M1 tank. To me, it looks like they're going to try to slowly graft it into normality through medical usage first and let some of these prisoners die off or finish their sentences. We're still talking a decade, at best.
I doubt there are that many people serving long term prison sentences for pot, unless they were moving large quantities or selling harder drugs as well.
Still, the law is that pot is illegal. I'd expect our leaders to follow the law. I'd also expect people to get some kind of penalty for breaking the law, regardless how stupid the law may be.
I don't know what a pot plant looks like either. I thought it always came dried and in little ziplock baggies.
There are pretty strong movements to legalizing it here. San Diego's DA office declared war on smoke shops a year ago with the backing of a few local narcs. They were successful in shutting down a few stores and filing injunctions against many others. Well, it being the DA it is obvious that she wanted some sort of soft, wide spread legal battle that would win her recognition and political favor. However there was a very large backlash about a month ago that ground her political crusade to a halt.
What is legal does not mean it is what is right. All too often we see that a law or legislation is not based on a moral truism.
