Help, I have an ATX issue

I have been having this problem with my car for about the last year or two and it has to do with the engine light. For some reason my car likes to buck when it shifts after getting off the high way (well its not all the time). Most of the time its like the exhaust system is too loose and makes the muffler hit the frame in the rear but here recently my cars been shifting so hard that it litterly makes the wheels chirp. And no I dont punch it to the floor. It shifts so hard that you can actually get whip lash from it. And like the title says I have an ATX transmission. I guess what I am getting at is has anyone experienced this problem? and if you have how did you fix it ? and how much did it cost to fix it?

Any suggestions are welcome because I am kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Oh, I did get a code from the engine light one was from my IAT sensor (which is fixed now), another has to do with catylist emissions and finally a Torque Converter issue (according to the book it mechanically shut its self off)

Is there a fuse that controls the line pressure for the tranny fluid? Check yur owner's manual, and have a look at the fuse.

I have heard of instances where people (not with Cougars) would pull that fuse when drag racing so they would get those freight-train shifts...

Why is that? Why would you want old fluid that doest have good properties anymore still in your case? Newer fluid will be much better on your parts than old crappy fluid right?

IIRC, the issue with flushing a high mileage tranny is the crap that collects in the bottom gets kicked back up and recirculates, unless you drop the pan and drain everything first.

I don't even know if the Cougar ATX has a pan? I didn't think it had a filter, at least that's what I've read.

RE:Help, I have an ATX issue

The ATX does have a filter( at least mine does) But not much of a pan if you can call that one The probblem with changing your tranny fluid is if you have never changed it before you will likely be causing more harm then good. Especially in higher mileage cars. On the other hand if you have changed your fluid at regular intervals in would be fine to continue actually you just about have to or you will be creating problems. As far the bucking prob check your pos. battery terminal for a good tight connection mine done that once under heavy acceleration and I found out that my terminal was loose from the night befores mod party and was causing the engine to stall. Also you may want to check your Spark plug wires for a good connection. If the engine ligh is flashing your engine is mis firing probblay plugs and wires. If its on solid its a prob in your emmission system. Not to sounds rude or like an A** but have you looked into your owners manual to see what could cause it? Just looking to help.

have you got the torque convertor fixed yet? that sounds like that's possibly what would happen if your having problems with it.

also, don't flush or change your fluid if you haven't been. my probe's was going out, so i changed the fluid and it went out right after i changed it. what happens is it actually gets this gel like build up that kinda acts to hold it together or what not. Omg and there was so many metal shavings stuck in there, no wonder. It sucked so bad, my car wouldn't shift into 3rd and i had to drive soooo slow for a few days till i could get it fixed.

OK, so basically if you've never changed your tranny fluid, don't ever bother? Can that even be good?
