website idea?

I was just over at the NJ NECO site. It's not nearly as cool as ours, but they do have a feature I like. On their members roster, each member has a profile, linked directly from the database at cougardb.com. So not only do you get the basic info, you also get a mod list and more photos if available. I dunno, Jason- is this something we could or should do? How does everyone else feel about this?

Actually it's something I was going to do with dv6cougar before cougardb.com came online, but realized we can't do it on our server as the language needed to call the information into our webpages costs extra to be able to use on our server (ie: php/css). We paid a very good price for hosting/domain name for 2 yrs, but along with good prices you do get limitations. Another problem with doing this is once again everyone would have to sign up for/register at another site and we have 86 members. Getting 86 people to sign up/register at another place would be close to impossible (obviously Bruce/ReddyEddy couldn't). When we were starting from scratch with the website it would have been more feasible at that time. It's just not a viable option at this time.

Maybe next year when we have to renew our domain name/server contract we can switch to a new server and we can look into it. I know dv6cougar is willing to work with me on this and possibly enter all the members info we already have and somehow make it so that people can then update their info using a blanket password until they actually go to the site to update their info, entering a new password. Another idea I have had is at some point this year I plan to either buy or build a new computer and I considered hosting the site from my computer at that time which would allow for no limitations and no down time (short of power outages).

To give you an idea of why we went with the server we did (even with it's limitations upon programing language) it only cost us $45 to register our domain name and hosting for 2 yrs. Doing the math that is only $1.88 per month.

It's a good idea, trust me, I talked with dv6cougar at length about this a couple months ago, but it's just not possible right now.
