Re: PuckPuck's insane 3L build...

All hot pipes, are wrapped. I have the y-pipe/up-pipe, down-pipe and split-pipe all sitting under a heat lamp with the header wrap. I'll do this until tomorrow...

Right now, my garage is a mess, and its only going to get worse. I'm trying to sell my house, which means I had to take down "The Wall" (sniffle), now I'm in the process of putting plaster over all the little holes, then I have to prime and repaint the walls so it will be sellable. After that I'll be able to do actual work...

with that being said, I don't consider dry fitting the turbo actual work, so my hope is to do that tomorrow night, and take a nice pic of it to put up here... after the pic, and cleaned garage, I'll be able to drop the engine in...

Last night all I could dream of was hitting 14 PSI and smoking the tires in 4th gear driving down the highway... it's getting so bad I'm might ask my wife to sleep on the couch, so the turbo can take her spot in bed...

Re: PuckPuck's insane 3L build...

So my wife (finally) asked the question, after staring at all the turbo parts spread out across the floor... "How much did all of this cost?"

she now knows how much the entire setup is going to cost... good news is everything is already paid for, so at least we were able to afford it, and well she's not mad (at least she's not letting on that she is)

WORST MISTAKE I EVER MADE ON THIS BUILD!!!

That's 12$ for a can of clear coat I won't get back. Another 12$ for a can of high temp ford blue I won't get back. 3-4 hours of my elbow grease I won't get back.

All that paint did was act like a paint stripper... literally... Not to mention the nozzle was **** on the paint can. I always thought of VHT as a low quality brand. This past experience just certifies it.

NEVER AGAIN WILL I TRUST HIGH TEMP CLEAR COATS!!!

Seriously, I thought it would be a good idea to shoot a coat of high temp clear on the engine. After all the clear coat is the same type (engine enamel) as the color coat, and the color coat has had a long time to cure (1 day sitting under the heat lamp, and since then another month+ sitting in my heated garage). I started with the transmission, sprayed it. Moved around to the other side, go in to take a closer look, and I notice the paint blistering on the transmission. I stop immediately to try and see what's going on, only to witness the blue paint litterally lift right off the transmission in front of my eyes. In less than 5 mins I had blotches all over the place, and what used to look fantastic, looked like a piece of ass. You could literally tell where I sprayed the clear coat and where I did not, based on the bare patches of paint on the transmission.

This isn't the first time I have had a bad experience with high temp clears, and at the same point it is also not the first time I had a bad experience with a VHT paint. So much for a high quality product. I could piss better paint than they make.

Re: PuckPuck's insane 3L build...

Wow, that sucks dude. It sounds like that clear coat is better at stripping paint, then some paint strippers.

Re: PuckPuck's insane 3L build...

Wow man, sorry you had a bad experience... I've used this exact paint on 6 different builds of mine -- never had an issue. It's also the same stuff we've used on over 50 classic car restores at the shop, never had an issue...

Re: PuckPuck's insane 3L build...

I call these the most beautiful Cougar Engine pictures EVER!!!

Not all bolts are the ones that will be used in the given spot. I just assembled this together so I can make sure it all fits well. Right now, I'm thinking I might just go for the gusto and install the turbo with the engine, to save the pain of installing a turbo after the engine is in the car.

Also when installing the Nautilus Performance Turbo kit, there is mention to modify (by cutting) an allen wrench in order to get to one of the bolts for the wastegate. Well this would of still proved to be difficult. I came up with a better solution. Use 2 allen wrenches, and bend one so that it will wrap around the wastegate. The way it works is use use a straight one to start the turn, then insert the bent one to finish the turn, go back to your straight one and repeat. Eventually you will tighten the bolt.
