    Any migraine suffer-ers??

Has anybody out there found a preventative that actually works? I have been going to a neurologist but I can honestly say that nothing has really helped.
They last an average of about 3 days and I probably get...on average...one a week.

Im to my breaking point & something has got to give.

Has anybody tried a preventative that helped? My doctor has even given me blood pressure medicine because she thinks it will restrict the vessels in my brain...WTF!?!? She has given me muscle relaxers to see if they are tension/stress migraines...I cant remember the last prescription she gave me but it was for "when I feel a migraine coming on" but the co-pay was $50 and you were only allowed 9 pills per month so I stopped taking them...they didnt really make adifference & I didnt think they were worth the co-pay. Nothing is working!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Imitrex and Relpax both work great for me.. unfortunately my Dr won't prescribe them anymore because it locks my jaw, my throat swells shut and my tongue swells up. LOL

I'm in the middle of trying to find something that works. An MRI is probably coming in 2 weeks when I go back because I'm out of medicine options.

carajo sent me a link about TMJ or something like that and I'm gonna ask my neurologist about that when I go back too.

I currently use Maxalt (have also tried Zomig & Imitrex) and it works for me - but it has to be taken just as it's starting - if a migraine is already going, it doesn't make a difference (and if I even swallow water in the middle of a migraine I'd throw-up anyway - so can't really take them then). Zomig and Imitrex felt like they were stronger to me but had weird feeling side effects that Maxalt doesn't.
My prescription is also 9 pills and can only be refilled every 30 days, and sometimes end up with more than 9 pills worth of headaches in a month My co-pay is $30, so a little better, but still sucks (retail is around $300, so better than that!).
I know there are generic versions in Canada of most of the migraine prescriptions, and last time I checked for mine, it wasn't in the US - but if your co-pay is $50, I'm wondering if it's considered a tier-1 drug, which typically means it's offered as a generic for the lower fee. You might want to check on that.

ETA: here's also an article on using vitamins / minerals to treat migraines.

I have had a sleep study done and they said I had a mild case of sleep apnea but nothing major. I have tried Imitrex...I cant remember if that was the one that left me drooling on myself on the couch or if itwas oone that had no effect on me.

Ive had this one since Saturday and today was the worst! I have heard about people having Botox in their neck muscles and I have had a few people tell me to try Fuericet (sp?)
I am on vacation this week and I have been stuck on the couch or laying down since Saturday...I love how many days of my life I waste with these migraines...and I think it is pathetic that I have them as often as I do...it is so frustrating!!!

I wish I could commiserate but I can't. I get a headache maybe twice a year. I have had an "opthalmic migraine" a couple of times in my life. Really weird ****- you see multicolored zigzaggies all over, kind of get tunnelvision, and after about 30 minutes its over.

Then after 30 minutes of peace, you are hit with the mother****ing sledgehammer of all headaches for a few hours.

    Sunni, do you smoke?
Have your doctors tested to see if there are different foods triggering your migraines?

    Re: Any migraine suffer-ers??

If this Dr. doesn't find something for mine I'm going to go Botox route, however the research I did was that the botox went into your forehead where the migraine pain was to separate the muscle from the skin. The Dr. I go to also does the Botox treatment.

If that doesn't work I'll go with the last resort. (this is a public forum not posting it here)
