CPUs?
I'm looking to build a new pc, and my has the world changed...
Used to be do I want AMD or Intel and then you choose your processor. Now there's dual core, quad core, core 2 duo, x2, etc... Can someone clarify what each of the processors that AMD and Intel are? And what would be your recommendation? I've been out of the loop to long. I'm looking to build something respectable that won't blow the bank. I do alittle bit of macromedia, photoshopping, and if I had the computer to handle it probably gaming to. Also, should i avoid AMD? I've owned 2 and loved them, but i hear they're behind right now? Thanks ![]()

Re: CPUs?
Dual , Quad Core & Core 2 Duo = Intel
x2, x4 = AMD AMD is fine. x2 at 5000 and above should be more than enough cpu for what you need at a good price. I'll retract my statement about core 2 duo, but lets just say im not a fan. Last edited by Kaioshin; 07-27-2008 at 12:26 PM. |

Re: CPUs?
I found the system build guides on Arstechnica to be useful. Here is their latest: Ars System Guide: Summer Gaming Edition: Page 1

Re: CPUs?
What are you gonna use the computer for?
The new Intel Core 2 Quad 6000 and 9000 series are very nice processors... I had read an article comparing the new AMD Phenom X4 to the Core 2 Quad and stated that with equivaent specs, the Intel processor was faster. my new compiter has the Core 2 Quad 6700 running 6gb of PC2-6400 800mhz ram. Should be fun...

Re: CPUs?
You'd have to pretty much be crazy to go AMD right now. Clock for clock, core2duo/quads destroy AMD's lineup.
Dual core - Look at the e8400 chips. 3.0ghz 6mb L2 for around $160 (after the next price cuts hit). If you're into overclocking you can get them to 3.6-4.0ghz easy. Quad core - The Q6600. 2.4ghz and under $200. Overclocking usually nets you around 3.0 - 3.2. Either of those chips are still fast as hell at stock speeds. If you're mainly going to be gaming, I'd get a dual core with higher speeds. For encoding and other intensive workstation loads, I'd go with the quad. The situation I would recommend AMD on is if you're looking for something cheap and under $100; which you can find the 5000+ Black edition processor. It has unlocked multipliers so you can bump it to 3.0-3.2ghz without much effort.
