Don't just send your resume in and wait for a response. You gotta follow up.
"I sent in my resume, when can we schedule a time to meet and discuss my qualifications" That type of pestering.

But I agree about monster and the like. Most of my search hits are staffing firms, not actual firms hiring. And good lord are those recruiters a bunch of friggin vultures. So annoying! Most of them offer me jobs not even related to my field.
yeah, just followed up with a company today that I applied for about a week ago. about to do it with a couple others

Re: job searching sucks

This thread is one of the big reasons I am working in the health care field. There are NO shortages of job opportunities there

Re: job searching sucks

Have you thought about going through a head hunter? Honestly, sometimes they are the way to go. How about your state government jobs? NY does not usually post their jobs anywhere other than their own website, and they have a plethora of open jobs at any given time.

Re: job searching sucks

Small strategy my dad showed me, go driving around industrial parks in your area. Write down the names of companies you see, then look them up on the Internet. If they're a larger company they will probably have job listings directly on their website. Smaller companies will usually have an HR email for you to forward your resume to. Pick companies you have expertise and interest in, and send the resumes directly.

I had a few interviews from resumes submitted via monster and careerbuilder, but I got my current job via the company's HR website.
