I don't think Wesley was attacking his service record per se, just trying to make the point that military service doesn't make you any more qualified for a task than the next person. That's something Wes could have played up when HE was running for president (having a President that was also a general would arguably have been a benefit to a country that was at the time of his candidacy involved in a war) but I don't remember him doing that (I may be wrong).
