Re: Was doing some research on Silent Hill ( PA residents...)

It's only around 100 miles away from where I live. I knew that about the game, just never had the chance to go. Maybe that's what I'll do for vacation this summer.

Re: Was doing some research on Silent Hill ( PA residents...)

I'm actually supposed to take another trip out there this month, a couple coworkers of mine are GIS people and make maps of the subsidances and other points of interest from a mapping standpoint.
Some strange feelings being out there, as well as some smells haha.

Re: Was doing some research on Silent Hill ( PA residents...)

My parents and I used to drive through there all the time on our way to stuff. I remember thinking how odd it was for the townhouses that were partially demolished - for example, the first unit might've been torn down, but the second unit was still standing. To reinforce the second unit, they'd build brick chimney-like structures against the wall of the second unit. Very strange looking (look around, there are pictures of them).

It's not entirely a ghost town - there are a few residents left. Like 5 or something.

If you do go, be mindful of the fact that people do live there. Also, carefully study the Google Maps of the area so that you can see where the bypassed Route 61 is in relation to the town - it doesn't actually bypass the town as is sometimes reported. There are hundreds of pictures on the web of it, and it's quite visible in Google Maps/Earth these days, so visiting is basically unnecessary any more.

Re: Was doing some research on Silent Hill ( PA residents...)

I was looking up modern ghost towns a few years ago and came across Centralia. VERY interesting stuff. I have had every intention to visit someday soon ... gas prices killing random road trips though.

The most interesting ghost town to me is Kitsault, BC. Modern ghost town: Entire factory town built in the late 70s and abandoned in the very early 80s. The town and all its buildings were maintained by one (very lonely) caretaker and his wife until it was purchased by some uber rich dude in 2005 who has hopes of transforming it into a vacation spot.
