Re: My new Katana

damn I have a set here that were my real dad's that we brought over from Japan when we moved to the states. I am pretty sure that they are real samuria's too cause i remember when I was younger I barely touched the blade and filled my finger wide open.

You're not going to get true battle-ready folded steel swords for that much- simple cut/forged steel isn't going to last very long against, say, another blade or real work.

At least it's full-tang which will help it live much longer. Just don't hit anything with it that's too hard, or you may end up with a shattered blade and wondering why you've got metal sticking out of your shoulder.
+1

Good steel starts around $800-1000 and up. Don't hurt yourself.

Yeah, if I have a great experience with this one, I might buy more over time, and of course, better quality. A multi-folded bi-metallic blade would be amazing, but also costs more than a Cougar.

Re: My new Katana

that katana really is for display than anything else.
if you really want a good entry level sword for cutting, try Paul Chen swords. They are actually designed for cutting and are very very well made for the price.
I used to have a nice collection but i sold it all since i moved here. I did have one from WWII which wasnt a stamped, mass produced one most Japanese officers carried. I was going to get pedigreed but the person who owned the sword before me polished the tang! (which totally ruins the value of the katana).

I'd love a Paul Chen sword. Care to enlighten me as to why polishing the tang kills the value?

Paul Chen sword can be had for couple hundred bucks. I got mine for 300. It was practical plus.

Basically, when the sword maker finish the sword, he will "sign" it. Once signed, that part of the sword is under tsuka.(handle)

well, since the tang is never cleaned, it will accumulate rust. And in order for apparaiser to determine when the sword was made, they evaluate the color and condition of the rust on the tang. Hence, no rust, no value. (well, not really, but value drops drastically.)

Re: My new Katana

So rust on a katana is good? Too bad it isn't that way for cars!
