I was on a job site about 8 years ago doing public sewer renovation work in a bad portion of chicago. turned out, meh, 50 years ago or something they decided to run many copper cables through this sewer line. So we had a machine that was pulling all this thick copper cable out of the system.

10 minutes after we started, and I wish I had this filmed, it was a zombie attach. dozens of people start coming out of the woodwork, attacking us to get these cables, pulling it directly from the machine [very dangerous]. we kept trying to tell them, they could have it, just wait for the machine to stop... it was a madhouse... anyways that escalated to people starting a dozen or so fires in the street trying to burn the rubber off the cables... it was very surreal, looked like a movie.

Re: Is this nation wide?!

It's happening a lot in empty foreclosed homes. In some cases the area is so notorious for it that the tenants who are being foreclosed upon are allowed to stay for free just so someone occupies the house.

Yeah thats the most common but it seems to happen in more populated places. I'm amazed somehow they took it from our house without anybody knowing. Since the houses are all mushed together. We always stay up till 2 or 3am anyway.

Re: Is this nation wide?!

It's happening worldwide, actually. I saw a report of people killed while trying to steal wire from railroad signal lights in Poland. Here in DC there was a vacant house that was discovered to have water pouring out of it, and the problem turned out to be that thieves had stolen the pipe.

Re: Is this nation wide?!

Copper is currently worth about 3.60 a pound. This works out great, because I have a buttload laying around I'm about to get rid of (~300lbs). Hooray!

And since the salvage places don’t care where you got it from, it’s only going to get worse, just like the catalytic converter thefts.

Re: Is this nation wide?!

while this has been going on country wide for years, it hasnt been that much of an issue locally in south east florida (yet), though we're now seeing a rash of people drilling into gas tanks and stealing your fuel, and that's only going to get worse. sigh.
