Recommend Your Mechanic

My inspection is up this month and my CEL has been on for almost a year. I pulled 4 codes this weekend and have searched the boards trying to determine what everything is going to cost me! The last place I got an inspection from screwed me and I just wanted to pass emissions and get out of there.

That being said, I don't want to get ripped-off because I'm a girl going to get work done on my car.

Anyone know a good "friend?" Thanks in advance.

Re: Recommend Your Mechanic

I'm my Mechanic.

NY went to the computer based inspection system for all OBDII cars. Your going to have a really hard time (pretty much no chance) passing with the CEL's.

What codes are you getting?

I really hate that mentality towards women.

I have a good friend, he's out here in Hampton Bays though.

Hampton Bays is far for me! I know I won't pass with my CEL. And have to wait the 24 hours after it's cleared, correct?

I'm pulling P1131 and P1151 - manufacturer controlled fuel & air metering - could that just mean I need to replace my fuel filter? And P0171 - bank 1 too lean and P0420 bank 1 catalyst efficiency below threshold.

I cleaned and reinstalled my air filter this weekend, so I'll check the codes again on Saturday and hopefully see if at least the P0171 cleared.

I know the O2 sensors are only 50-60 bucks a piece, but if I have to replace the DPFE sensor or the EGR, how much would that run? Like another 100 bucks? Damn the labor rates!

Thanks for your help, guys.

Re: Recommend Your Mechanic

I know it's far, I don't expect you to have to travel. I live in the middle of nowhere....

The emmisions test relies on "readiness" monitors. When the codes are reset those monitors shouldn't be. However on the off chance that they do get reset it would be a good idea to drive it for a day.

P1131 - Lack Of Upstream HO2S Switch, Sensor Indicates Lean, Bank No. 1
P1151 - Lack Of Upstream HO2S Switch, Sensor Indicates Lean, Bank No. 2

I would get the upper 02's done and see what that clears up. You might need to get the downstream's replaced as well. If your pre-cat is going I can let you borrow my MIL's so you can pass. There is no reason to have to replace the DPFE or EGR. The DPFE generally throws a EGR flow insufficient code.

Re: Recommend Your Mechanic

I dont know how far you are from NJ but i have a Mechanic that has never steered me wrong. And he's the only one I allow to touch anything on my car. and his prices(for me or the business i bring) is redicuosly low. I.e. 65 for changing my ALT. $25 For changing rear brake cables and on and on you get the picture.

Re: Recommend Your Mechanic

Hey Jason, sorry I didn't get back to you. I was running around all day Saturday. And I'm busy again this weekend - furniture delivery and a baby shower (ugh).

Plus I was all excited because the CEL just happened to turn off this week! It was crazy. For like a whole four days. And of course, this morning, when I'm driving in the rain, it comes back on. I'm like, damn, I was almost in the clear!

I'm definitely going to take a ride to Deer Park on the 18th. What time do you think they open? Like 8am? I want to get out there early. I'll call him the day before and see if they can run a diagnostic.

Thanks for the help!
