FYI for 01/02 2.5 Duratec owners replacing PCV valves.

If you own a 2001-2002 Cougar with a 2.5L Duratec and are replacing your PCV valve, take note- the rubber boot at the bottom of the PCV valve is prone to ripping because it is very weak/thin rubber. A GOOD replacement for this comes with part:

YS4Z-6758-BA, which is a tube for the PCV system for the Focus.

The rubber boot on this is at least twice as thick and has the same size ports as necessary for the 01/02 2.5L

Also, the "PCV Valve" on the 01/02 doesn't really seem to be a PCV valve. There's no valve inside. It's just a little plastic tree, basically. Weird.

Anyway, tearing of this boot can cause a vacuum leak which may give you irregular stalling and/or performance.

watch out...i told someone about the empty tree once and i got flamed because the "duratec authorities" said there was only one type of PCV valve for the 2.5 regardless of year.

Slow down...I don't remember anyone saying here was "Only 1 type". What I think is that since that plastic tree is the part in question that there was some huge communication breakdowns. Even though it may not have that "valve", its still the "pcv valve". I remember the pic posted .

NorCal is offering a solution to a potential problem, I don't think anyone will attack him for it.

Re: FYI for 01/02 2.5 Duratec owners replacing PCV valves.

(Yes, I know this is an old thread, but it looks like there is still some confusion around here about the 01-02 PCV)

I had a torn PCV elbow on the 02 XR that I picked up. I found it wrapped with electrical tape which barely did anything. There was a leak and the idle was all over the place when I bought the car.

As discussed in many other threads, the Ford parts catalog shows the wrong PCV setup for the 01-02 Duratec Cougars. The parts listed and displayed in the catalog are actually for the 99-00 Cougars as well as 95-00 Contour/Mystique. Don't bother ordering any of those parts unless you plan on converting the entire system from a 95-00 including the crankcase vent.

The Focus hose mentioned above worked out fine but it's not a direct fit. You need to retain half of the original 01-02 elbow to act as a reducer for the new hose since it's not the same diameter at both ends.

    Original hose on the right:

    Wrong diameter at one side:

Cut off the damaged section from the original hose:

Slide the new hose over the other half of the old hose:

Also, there is a PCV on the 01-02 but it's located in another spot, hence the empty tree where the PCV is located on the 99-00.

If you follow the hard plastic hose from the "PCV tree" to the crankcase vent, you'll find the PCV.

This is some good information. I looked mine over good and found that on my Vortech car the plastic line between the PCV valve and the 'tree' had a spot where the IMRC cable was rubbing against it. I checked out the one that came off the '02 I had parted and in the same spot it had actually worn through that plastic tube. On the Vortech car, I put a piece of split loom tubing around it to protect it and made sure the IMRC cable won't rub on it any more.

Interesting. I''ll have to check the IMRC cable routing and see if it's touching on mine. Thanks for heads up.

I'm amazed that after all this time, Ford never corrected the issue with the parts catalog. There's probably a stock pile of these NOS hoses sitting in a warehouse somewhere that will never sell.
