My Trunk Will Not Stay Open . . .

Does anyone know the actual name of the bars that hold the trunk open? I am in need of replacing these parts. If anyone can help, please message me. Thanks.

they are called lift supports. if you go to rockauto.com they are like 18 bucks I think. just navigate through the catalog to cougar its under "body-exterior" then "lift support" they range from 12-20 dollars

Good thread. I'd've gone with trunk struts but now I know better. Just got a set yesterday from the junk yard, pulled them off an 02 with front end damage for like 5 bucks.

Are you sure the trunk is just not staying open because its cold out? That happens to a few people (myself included) every winter.

There are also two types of lift supports... the stock replacements are rated for 75lbs each if I remember right. (Hatch + glass weighs 150lbs) and then there are heavier duty ones that are rated higher (can't remember how much, but a few people have them, and their trunk literally FLIES open if you don't hold onto it past a certain point. Not joking! )
Those are the one's I would get if I were replacing them. The stock ones feel as if a strong wind could close the trunk on your head if you aren't careful.

Doesn't even take a strong wind sometimes.

I am certain that my problem has nothing at all to do with the weather. In fact, this has been happening for quite some time now. I decided that I would log in to ask fellow Cougar owners.

I've got the same problem. When I got the car in the summer, the trunk worked fine, but once winter and the cold @ss weather came around, my trunk's been trying to eat my head ever since. I thought it was the weather.

it partly is the weather. Mine works fine in the summer, and when cold (and more so if gold and covered in rain/ice) the struts will not stay up. But then, they are 9 years old.........
