Confused Importing a cougar from canada to us

Anyone ever do this? Have any info on it?

I found this soo far

http://www.dot33.state.pa.us/pdotfor...ts/fs-ieve.pdf

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/impo...da01192007.htm

Car would be driven from Canada to US, Buffalo NY and picked up by me and driven back to Pittsburgh PA. If anyone has done this or somthin similar and can help explain the process a little better that would be much appreciated.

Also does anyone know the actuall differances between US and Canada spec cougars?

Re: Importing a cougar from canada to us

well... my father recently brought a vehicle from the US into CANADA, and he had to have it safety checked, emissions checked, i'm sure there was customs/duty/taxes somewhere in there too, and then get it registered in Ontario...
I would imagine it would be the same thing for going the other way. He didn't say it was difficult, just lots of paper work and running around to different places.

I don't remember there ever being a DIFFERENCE between the two... maybe just Day-Time running lights on the Canadian ones?

Re: Importing a cougar from canada to us

emmissions may be my problem, or may not. I can use my moms address like I do for my cars and be emmssions exempt. The prob with emmisons I would have is with the turbo kit. I know that it is hard to get an aftermarket turbo through emmissions.

In Canada is it labeled as a ford or a mercury cougar?

Re: Importing a cougar from canada to us

ooh turbo'd you say! That will definitely be interesting... No one in Ontario has gone through that yet, so you'll have to let us know.

Canada labels them as Mercury.

Re: Importing a cougar from canada to us

yeah I wanted a cougar that was a little faster than my v6 atx, so for the price I couldnt pass it up. I just need to figure out how to get it legal in the US before any money exchanges.

The fact that it is still a mercury in canada should help me. The only differance I was aware of was the day time running lights.

I know I need a customs form, pay duties, pay tax, insurance, and inspection.

I read about a sticker on the drivers door, which if its there means that car meets us spec.

Quote:
Motor vehicles manufactured not more than 25 model years ago are subject to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards (FMVSS) and emission requirements to be imported permanently and cannot be titled and
registered in Pennsylvania without proof of conformity with those requirements. Vehicles manufactured to meet
the FMVSS will have a certification label affixed by the original vehicle manufacturer in the area of the driverside
door. To make importation easier, when purchasing a vehicle certified to the U.S. standards in a foreign
country, the buyer should have the sales contract verify that the label is attached and present this document at
time of importation.
I already asked the seller and im waiting on his reply, but if any of you canadians wanna help me out speed up the process, can you take a peek at your drivers door and tell me what sticker is there.

Re: Importing a cougar from canada to us

This is there to

Quote:
A motor vehicle that bears a label certifying compliance with all applicable Canadian motor vehicle safety standards (CMVSS), but not with the FMVSS, can still be imported as a conforming motor vehicle under Box 2B on the HS-7 Declaration form to be presented to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Customs) at the time of entry if the following requirements are met:

The vehicle is being imported for personal use and not for resale;
The vehicle is not a salvage vehicle, a repaired salvage vehicle, or a reconstructed vehicle;
The importer obtains a letter from the vehicle’s original manufacturer, on the manufacturer’s letterhead (and not that of a franchised dealer), identifying the vehicle by vehicle identification number (VIN) and stating that the vehicle conforms to all applicable FMVSS except for the labeling requirements of Standards Nos. 101 Controls and Displays and 110 Tire Selection and Rims or 120 Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles other than Passenger Cars, and/or the specifications of Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment, relating to daytime running lamps.

Note: To be imported under Box 2B a motor vehicle must be certified by its original manufacturer as complying with all applicable CMVSS. Certain vehicles that are at least 15 years old that are not so certified can be imported into Canada without restriction. Such vehicles may not be imported into the United States under Box 2B.
