It lets you know when your alt is dying. If the gauge stops working (along with your lights, radio, engine, etc), you have low voltage.

Tom how do you reset rpm's? I always forget when I see you to find out how to set them. Mine are off and have been since for a long time.

What I do find interesting about electrical systems is that when you have low voltage in a Mark VIII the car disables the ABS and then the TC, then the lights start dimming and then only after that does the "Check Charging System" caption appears.
