Re: The Undead Gateway Thread

So I'm currently in the process of applying for a position to blog on the Chicago Bears . . . if I get it I'll have to write five 250 word blogs per week. No pay right off the bat but if I produce enough high-quality content (i.e. generate ad revenue) there will be some compensation available.

Re: The Undead Gateway Thread

Tell all your friends . . . more traffic = more money for me.

By the way, they liked my writing and I'm being put in contact with whoever handles their HR.

Here's the two samples . . .

Quote:
After seeing a crummy offense like San Francisco hang 37 points on the legendary-in-their-own-minds Bear defense, I hope all tickets to home games this year come with a roll of Tums as this is a team almost guaranteed to induce heart burn.

The Bears spent big bucks on several players considered to be core components of the team, and the defense was promised to return to the dominating form it displayed in 2005 and 2006. Instead, the $186.9 million doled out by Jerry Angelo in the offseason appears to have been spent constructing the NFL equivalent of the Maginot Line, if Saturday night’s performance against the 49ers is any indication.

Most disturbing about the entire game was just how overmatched and underprepared the defense looked. Bears reject JT O’sullivan could have taken the snap, hopped on the Dan Ryan, driven to Halas Hall, thanked Jerry Angelo for cutting him, gone to the MARS Cheese Castle since he was so close by, driven BACK to Soldier Field, and still had time to complete a pass.

Also, it’s good to see the enormous impact Mike Brown has made in his return to the defensive backfield. Brown’s injury was largely blamed for the Bears’ porous run defense the last two seasons, but the Bears were able to hold the 49ers to a mere 160 yards rushing, so he’s shored that area of concern right up.

After the game defensive coordinator Bob Babich assured the media the Bears would be a “dominant defense” this year. I’m not sure what team he was watching Saturday night, but that statement reeks of Dave Wannstedt’s infamous “all the pieces are in place” rhetoric. The defense looks about as legitimate as Travis Henry’s kids, and if that doesn’t change, and fast, what little hope there was for this season will be quickly snuffed out.
and

Quote:
It’s the line, stupid.

Of all the problems the Bears exhibited last year, the one most in need of fixing was far and away the sieve of an offensive line. That’s almost hard to believe between the putrid quarterback situation, the Lance Briggs soap opera, Tank Johnson auditioning for America’s Dumbest Criminals, the trainwreck in the backfield, the receivers who couldn’t catch a cold, and a rash of injuries that turned Halas Hall in to a triage ward.

No, the single biggest difference from 2006 to 2007 was the performances of the offensive line. On their Super Bowl run, the Bears were able to run right over the opposition, controlling the clock and allowing the defense to devastate the other team’s offense. The defense was able to be so effective due to the offense sustaining lengthy drives and allowing the defense to stay fresh.

The same offensive line was intact for the 2007 season, or at least the players with the same names and likenesses were lining up at the same positions. But as good as the line had been in 2006, it was as bad in 2007, as the clock seemingly struck midnight for the veteran group and they all turned in to pumpkins.

The Bears seemed to be on the right track early in the offseason by parting ways with Ruben Brown and Fred “Drive Killer” Miller, seemingly paving the way for a left tackle to be taken in a tackle-rich draft while sliding John Tait over to the right side and leaving just one guard spot to be filled, while believing Olin Kruetz would return to Pro-Bowl form and Roberto Garza would continue to play at a high level.

Unfortunately the Bears left themselves with a razor-thin margin of error and now, with the injury to Chris Williams, find themselves relying on career backups and young, unproven players to plug the holes in the line. Judging from the results in the preseason – and remember, defenses typically use basic fronts, don’t blitz excessively and stick to a basic game plan in the preseason – I hope that every quarterback on the roster has his insurance premiums paid up, because they are gonna need it.
