Still does! Its never been involved in a fatal accident.

Ture. I don't know how exactly they determine those numbers. Are they just for fatalities, or do they include loss of aircraft (this on is close) or injuries (this one had 3)? You then get into pilot error. It isn't necessarily the airplanes fault when a CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain) occurs, which has happened a few times.

Re: The Undead Gateway Thread

We do, and the planes can fly themselves, but passengers feel more comfortable having a pair of people up front.

I definitely don't know how they tabulate those statistics, but, I think its safe to say no one's ever died from an incident involving a 777's flight, if only because there are multiple sources I have read indicating it has never been involved in a fatal accident.

Wikipedia further supports a lack of previous fatalities and also indicates initial reports claiming the pilot was trying to dead-stick the landing.

Obviously take that with a grain of salt as its Wikipedia, but it backs other sources I've seen.

Re: The Undead Gateway Thread

Initial reports do say that, they also say it didn't run out of fuel. That leads one to assume a dual engine failure, which hasn't ever happened on a modern jetliner and falls into the category of extremely unlikely. I'm more likely to believe one or more of the initial reports is inaccurate. There was also report of a significant electrical issue, but that shouldn't cause you to dead stick it.

Re: The Undead Gateway Thread

I read some somewhat frightening stuff about fuel levels and how airlines are trying to cut costs by putting as little additional fuel in the aircraft as possible, which is a bit disconcerting. On the other hand, that article primarily concerned American-flagged carriers so that may not even be a question in this case.

I'll be very interested to see the outcome of this. I know there's so many redundancies on passenger aircraft that if it was some sort of total system failure, it'll be interesting to find out just what caused it.
