winter beater problem

well i just purchased a 1992 ford escort off my friend who owned it a few years ago and then sold it to his friend. well i bought it off the friend today. and it has 2 problems but one i can fix, the iginiton has the key broken off in it and it wont come out, but i will be buying a new ignition lock cylinder tomorrow. but the real problem is it wants to stall all the time, it will start up no problem, when started it goes to stall out but then it goes back to normal and then wants to stall again, it keeps doing it until it dies. i'll be putting some new plugs and wires on it tomorrow, could this be a vaccumm leak somewhere or what? i'm trying to get ideas so i have something to shoot for when i'm fixing this up

I don't know squat about the escort, but I would say check for a vacum leak after the MAF, assuming they have a MAF. Unmetered air will cause a seaking idle like that. Also, check to see if they have something like an IAVC, just like on the cougar if that is faulty it also can cause a seaking idel.

a vaccum leak was my first guess, which is no big deal to fix, and it does have an iacv, it right on top

Re: winter beater problem

try unpluggin the maf, it will run rich but the idle should hold when its running off the maps (assuming its a vacuum leak)
