I was referring to pre 2009 Corolla's ... before Toyota decided to Americanize the car and bloat it by 300 lbs. My 2005 Corolla was capable of 45 MPG which I achieved on 3 different occasions. The lifetime mileage when I traded the car in with 78,000+ miles on it was 37 MPG. BTW, that 45 MPG was achieved in 80/20 highway/city driving.

It comes down to driving style ... I guarantee that I could surpass any car magazine's tested mileage by 10-15% ... they are afterall driving the car to test it out, so I'm sure they are on the brakes hard and on the gas just as hard. I have yet to see a major car magazine test a vehicle for it's fuel economy explicitly.
