head on with a 20 ton concrete barrier and very minor passenger cell damage ... now if it could only get better gas mileage than a used Toyota Corolla, it might be worth it! Oh wait, the Corolla gets better mileage AND is larger AND has a trunk AND is better looking AND outperforms the car in all performance measures AND ...

You had me until you said better looking. err. no. I'd take a civic over a corolla. As I said before, I'm test driving it today - I might think otherwise after.

Re: I Have a Confession to Make

a corolla? Hey I can't hate on another car someone else wants, but as for me :p no thank you. But if he likes them, then he should get one

Oh the Corollas rated gas mpg is actually lower then the Smarts
Quote:
The all-new 2009 Toyota Corolla is offered in five versions, base, LE, XLE, S and XRS. The standard 1.8-liter engine produces 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque with estimated fuel economy of 27/35 city/highway with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The XRS receives a 2.4-liter that produces 158 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque and is rated at 22/30 city/highway with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic.

Reviews that I've seen for the smart have rated the mpg at 35/41

we'll see though, again performance makes me wonder

Re: I Have a Confession to Make

I was referring to pre 2009 Corolla's ... before Toyota decided to Americanize the car and bloat it by 300 lbs. My 2005 Corolla was capable of 45 MPG which I achieved on 3 different occasions. The lifetime mileage when I traded the car in with 78,000+ miles on it was 37 MPG. BTW, that 45 MPG was achieved in 80/20 highway/city driving.

Re: I Have a Confession to Make

It comes down to driving style ... I guarantee that I could surpass any car magazine's tested mileage by 10-15% ... they are afterall driving the car to test it out, so I'm sure they are on the brakes hard and on the gas just as hard. I have yet to see a major car magazine test a vehicle for it's fuel economy explicitly.
