Word. I'd rather buy a used Golf TDI.

Some days I wish I still had one of my odl diesels (89 Jetta, 82 Rabbit) neither of them were turbos though. I did make a mint when I sold the Jetta though.

Re: Would you pay 5 times book value for a used car?

My dad had an '85 Jetta diesel (not TDI - it was the "knocka knocka knocka ping thunk" type) he used for commuting. He'd get 40+ MPG with that thing regularly. It was quite a car. But again it comes back to the fact that diesel now costs more than gas.

My coworker said he used to get 55 mpg in his Metro. The only thing would be to take an old diesel and put in the $400 kit to run on used vegetable oil. There are people around here who do, and diners give them the veggie oil for free, because, otherwise, they'd have to pay to get rid of it.
