Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
your from wisconsin arent you??
anyways, the V8 swap is always a fun theoretic conversation. I've spoken with the V8 focus swap shops a few times in the past concerning this... the cougar is a whole different ball game so dont expect much usefull from them. the biggest hurdles are going to be enlarging the 'transmittion tunnel', replacing the fuel tank with a fuel cell [no I dont think the mondeo one is going to work], making custom electical harnesses for THE WHOLE CAR, the whole steering rack is probably going to need reworking, and obviously some massive modifications to the front subframe... not to mention alot of strengthening to the body to compensate for the extra weight/power.

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
Though you would think they are similar cars, the Focus and the Cougar and COMPLETELY different underneath and in the engine compartment. Trust me - I own both.
Whereas our Cougar use a cradle style front subframe, the focus uses a standard crossmember subframe, meaning the kit that is produced for the Focus won't even be remotely similar to what we would need. At all.

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
While not exactly the same, this should give a feel for what would be involved. A Cougar would need additional fabrication in the rear for the differential/driveshafts.

RWD V8 Cougar...who cares about weight?!? lol well if it were possible. Wouldn't the easiest way to do this is grab the shell from a mustang pull it off and replace it with a cougar?

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
I was just talking about this with kari last night. One thing I alway wanted to do, and thought might, MIGHT be easier, is making the cougar a mid engine car.

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
mid-engine, woudln't it be easier to just push the firewall back if needed? But at the same time people have put 5.0L's under the hood..
mid-engine would be sweet tho..

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
The problem with mid-engine is, what trans and drive axle would you use?

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
Use the current drivetrain. The whole back half of the car would need massive surgery to get it to all fit.

Re: Ford Mondeo MKI and the ellusive RWD Cougar
It would be alot of cutting and tubing(may be able to utilize current subframe in some manner) and a new rear suspention, plus moving the gas tank to the front of the car, or doing a fuel cell. Making a wall btwn you and the engine, and cooling ducts in the rear hatch. Just to name a few changes. But yes, could just use the current drivetrain. Kinda like the two engined tiburon...but minus the front engine.
