I was talking with he fiance, and she asked me what the difference between a sun roof and a moonroof was. I said as far as I knew a Moonroof you have a panal you can close, and a sunroof is always open. Is this true?

Re: difference btwn Moonroof and sunroof

from wiki

Quote:
A sunroof is an opening in an automobile roof. Sunroofs may be either fixed or operable.
An automotive sunroof is a fixed or operable opening in an automobile roof which allows light and/or fresh air to enter the passenger compartment. Sunroofs may feature a transparent or opaque panel, may be manually operated or motor driven, and are available in many shapes, sizes and styles. (see sunroof definitions below)
Historically, European factory installed sunroofs have been opaque, and slide open to to allow sunshine and fresh air into the passenger compartment. Most factory sunroofs offered today feature a glass panel, and are often referred to as moonroofs.
Variations have become the norm in both factory installed and aftermarket offerings, creating a wide range of features and choices.

Re: difference btwn Moonroof and sunroof

A sunroof can sometimes be a moonroof, but a moonroof will never be a sunroof.

Re: difference btwn Moonroof and sunroof

- If it's a glass panel (you can see outward without opening), it's a moonroof. If it's a moonroof with an interior sliding panel to block the sun when the roof is closed, it's still a moonroof.
- If it's a solid panel (can't see out unless you open it), it's a sunroof.

At least those are the definitions I've already heard and used. The way I've kept them straight, even on a cold night you can see the moon while staying warm when you've got a moonroof.

hummm... I've always thought of a 'sunroof' as being the one with the glass panel (with or without the interior sliding shade), and 'moonroof' as a solid (painted to match exterior) panel.

sun=day/visible
moon=nite/not visible

I agree with Goldie on this one, but when it comes down to it either one means you got a hole in the roof of your car that lets light and air in when open. I see no reason to hash over which is which.

Re: difference btwn Moonroof and sunroof

I always though of it like this:

A sunroof you need to open to let the light and air in, because its sunny out, and it's getting warm in your car, and you want the light and nice blowing air all over you... Like a convertable.

A moonroof is when you want to see the moon, but it's at night, and fricken freezing, so you have the piece of glass that you can look through...

Re: difference btwn Moonroof and sunroof

I thought cougars came with "moonroofs". I know I cant see out mine unless it is open and air is flowing in. Wouldn't this make it a sunroof by your definition?
