Confused BMW Alpina?

What is it?
Heres some back story. I work at a golf course here in Florida, and there are quite a few rich mofo's on the south end of this island community. So from time to time, I'll see some nice cars in the parking lot of my work. About a month ago, this guy pulled up in a RR Phantom :drool. Well today i had my phone with me so I snapped some quick pictures of what appears to be a BMW Alpina, but I've never heard of it. I was under the impression all their cars had numbers like the 3xxi, 5xxi, 7xxli, z3, x5, etc, etc. Anyway, I thought the car looked pretty sleek so i snapped some quick shots and thought I'd share them and see the basic opinion around here of this car.

Re: BMW Alpina?

Its just a special edition made by another company... like AC Schnitzer, and Hamann (both of which also make modified bmw's)

TopGear took it for a spin, and came to the conclusion that they ruined it

The Alpina is basically the BMW Z8 run through a factory approved Tuner shop. The Z8 was a very limited edition (about 6000 made from 2000-2003), very expensive (about $130K) halo vehicle for BMW. In 2003 the Alpina edition took the Z8 in a different direction. It was tuned to be more of a cruiser then sports car. To that end the engine was detuned down from 400HP in the Z8 to 375 in the Alpina. Only automatics were available in the Alpina. The interior though is much higher grade then the Z8 and run flat tires were not available for the Alpina exclusive 20" wheels. There were only about 550 Alpinas and most of them came to the US and were sold through BMW dealerships.

Re: BMW Alpina?

Alpina is just another tuning company for BMW.

Here's the video where Clarkson rips apart the BMW Alpina.
