Drive axle strength

Not sure if this is the place to ask this. But im budgeting to get a 3l and 3lduratec.com supercharger kit and was wondering if the drive axles are strong enough to support all the added power from the supercharger on slicks and a stage 3 clutch again not sure if i was supposed to post this here or the transmission section

Re: Drive axle strength

slicks for drag or for autox?

for autox you are good, i run them all the time. for drag you *should* be ok, just depends on how you dump the clutch and how sticky the track is

Re: Drive axle strength

Of course you can run it.. but the chances of it breaking are very high.. i know of 3L SVT's who dropped it @ 2k and broke a axel

Re: Drive axle strength

it is a drag track and its well set up i mean i hook up well on street tires and the little mods i've got dropping at about 2500 im worried the with the new parts that im planning on installing and the slicks that the axles won't be able to handle at that torque also is there any way i can get stronger axles as a safety net

Re: Drive axle strength

It's all about how you drive the thing. I had cheapy Advance Auto reman halfshafts in my turbo 3L for 2 years before I sold it- Nary a problem. Then again, I didn't go slamming gears or drag launching. Smooth engagement of the power is fine, even if it's putting over 400hp out of the crank. But the first time you shock the drivetrain, the weakest link is going to start degrading, eventually leading to failure.

Re: Drive axle strength

You'll definitely need a LSD before the axles break. Look into a Torsen or a Quaife. The axles will be the next to go. I'd bring a trailer if you plan to run slicks.

Re: Drive axle strength

OK just to add my 1p/1cent worth lol

i was having the same worry when i was modding my car with the 3l now the problem i had was my drive shafts/axles needed to be shortened

now the ones i had made are good for 600bhp so thay say and cost £700/$1300 not cheep

but the biggest problems not-the shaft it was always going to be the drive joint/CV joint

so I'm assuming that will be the weakest link for you to .........

hope that helps

Re: Drive axle strength

Actually when the axles snap it normally isn't the joint. A few have posted up pictures of the axles snapping right at the spline leaving the end of the axle stuck in the transmission. I don't believe anyone has had a joint issue.

Re: Drive axle strength

Joint faillure is usually only high hp/tq applications. Your correct as the splines is usually where failure occurs.

Re: Drive axle strength

okay. iv broken 13 half shafts. i have put my u joint into about 8 pieces and had the worst vibration imaginable goin on. id say prolly 5 of my axles were due to joint failure if not more. but this last one was the funnest id say.
