Re: Project: Mavro Gato - 99 Turbo'd 3L
Some shots of the VCB air/oil seperator setup:
Best part is, it takes up the space that was a gaping hole and allowed airflow to bypass the radiator, so they kill two birds with one stone with their placement. ![]() ![]() Look closely and you can see the drain pepcock on both units. ![]() And the nasty sludge that comes out of it! This was roughly 50 miles worth of buildup ... about 15-20 boost runs in there. It's a 50/50 mix of water and oil/blow-by gases. This was the VCB's unit ... the PCV unit had mostly water with only a few drops of sludge. This has me contemplating removing the PCV valve all together as it's becoming a restriction to blow-by venting and forcing pressure out the VCB, which would account for the sludge accumulation being much more concentrated in the VCB canister. ![]() I will get some shots tomorrow of the intake pipe and how it now has a 2nd barb. I want to remove the MAF anyways and see if any oil residue is making it through the lines.

Re: Project: Mavro Gato - 99 Turbo'd 3L
Well, I was poking around under the hood today to start planning some fairly major changes to the system due to an observation over the last few months. So, I decided to pull the MAF and check the fittings for any oil residue ... NONE ... the oiling issue is resolved!
![]() The fitting on the left is for the PCV line and the one on the top is for the VCBs. So, what am I planning ... reversing the flow of the system. I have noticed when running the car on boost, if I get out shortly after, even on 90+ degree days, the piping is cool the touch where the piping comes out of the fender and into the engine bay after the intercooler. However, due to heat from the headers and from the radiator fans and intercooler itself, the piping is NOTICEABLY hotter over the radiator. I suspect that I can drop the final intake temp by at least 10-15 degrees if not more by reversing the flow so that all the heat is put into the intake charger before it sees the intercooler. The plan ... it should only take a few hours to fab. ![]() ![]()

Re: Project: Mavro Gato - 99 Turbo'd 3L
sounds like a good plan, trevor. props to you for owning up to it... and working to perfect it! i'm gonna have to reassemble my induction piping as well; it's begun to rust. ideally, i would also move my BOV closer to the TB. it's currently by the air filter, so it spits oil right on the filter.

Re: Project: Mavro Gato - 99 Turbo'd 3L
So, I finished the changes and well ... the car is SICK!!! It's making about 1-2 psi more at the exact same setting as before. I'm attributing it to less bends after the intercooler and a cooler charge. Throttle response has also picked up significantly! I'm extremely happy with the setup now!!!
However, take a look at the last picture ... in the bottom left hand corner is the first coupler joint. Well, since the joint is verticle and there is no "lip" on the edge of pipes, I managed to blow the pipes apart twice. First time, I thought that I blew the engine due to the loud "BOOM" followed immediately by a stumbling engine that are near dying and wouldn't respond to throttle input AT ALL. Scared the piss out of me until I got out and figured what was going on. So, today's project is to pull the piping, at the two unions and weld on a small extension and then cut off everything after the weld so that the weld can act like a lip bead. Currently, the couplers are only held on by tension and it's making too much boost to keep them together due to a slightly off alignment. ![]() ![]() ![]()
