I believe you can use either one, since both are for 6x8 cutouts. Looks like you can save a buck by getting the universal, but then what's a buck? That doesn't even get you anything a the Bell anymore. Ironically, I just bought a set made by Metra today myself. Picked them up at Circuit, paid 15. I would've bought them off sounddomain, but I needed them immediately. I also picked up a set of wiring harnesses, probably a good idea, even if you don't have a lease.

i need them immediately, but i went to brandsmart and another installation place and both said they dont stock the plates, they custom fabricate, so i figured i had no choice. i guess ill get the universals, sounds like a safer bet. what do the harnesses do, can you just plug the wires strait into the new speakers, there are two terminals right on the back. btw, kicker mids are good right, i got the i 650's.

The harnesses keep you from cutting the "plug" off that goes into the factory speakers. The other end of the harnesses probably won't fit the terminals on your midrange, so use the wires that came with them and connect to the harnesses with butt-end splices if they don't fit. You'll need a crimper, something you can pick up for less than $10, but you'll have it for all your future installs. You might be able to find a starter kit with a crimper and a bunch of butt-end splices and ring terminals pretty cheap. I'm presuming the 650's are 6 1/2", so they SHOULD fit, especially since there wouldn't be tweeter protrusion. I don't know the depth, but there should be enough clearance.

I have the universal 6x8 adapters, ordered from sounddomain. Yeah they fit. The problem is the stock screw holes in our cars. I have Infinity Kappa 6.5s in them, and the edge of the speaker overlaps the stock screw holes by a milimeter or two. So I had to force the screws in at an angle. Not perfect, but it works. When I get my tax money I'm wiring them up to an amp, and I'll probably drill new holes so I have a nice solid mount.

Just looked at the latest Crutchfield magazine and they list the Cougar as having 6x8's front and back. I've not popped the door panels yet so I figured Crutchfield would know.............guess we're both wrong.

All four speakers in the Cougar (the '99 at least) are identical 5x7's (well, mine aren't anymore...). 6x8's still fit though, since the hole is big enough to fit them and most speaker manufacturers provide screw holes to fit Ford's 5x7's in addition to the standard 6x8 screw holes.
