It's time for a high output alt

So the time has finally come for me to get a new alternator. I got this Cougar new in Sept. 99, & its is still on its first alt. I have been running a Eclipse XA4000 4 channel amp & a HIFONICS BXi2006D 2000W mono sub amp for a couple of years now.
I have to turn the music down @ idle, or I'll end up with a dead battery fast. But all in all the stock alt has been able to keep up with my stereo. So now it’s dead & I have a reason to upgrade.
I have a few questions…

1. How many amps do I need? 200 amp or 300 amp? (see amplifiers above)
2. Where should I buy a high output alternator?
3. Is there a power wire that goes straight from the alt to the positive post of the battery? Or does it go through the fuse box or something?

Thanks a million!

Re: It's time for a high output alt

220 worked for me and I'm running a little over 3000 watts . I got mine from DB electrical and love it, you'll need to get new wiring for the ALT.
the alt and wires ran me about $300 bucks

The cable runs from the battery to the starter to the alt

PS a new optima yellow top battery helps 2

Thanks! Yea I currently use an Optima Yellow top. B1tch has been drained down to nothing & back more times than I can remember in two years, & its still going strong! I think I'll try a kinetik when I finally do kill this Yellow Top though. They seem to fit alot more amps into a smaller package.

Re: It's time for a high output alt

that alt, yes... the power kit, sure if you don't have any of that laying around... I'd use higher quality wire, looks to be "generic" wire... But, I could be wrong...

When I did the big 3 and the alt in my coug, I ran Kicker Hyperflex 1/0 (yes, overkill lol) I beleive i still have an entire roll of it, and a roll of 4 ga too come to think of it

Re: It's time for a high output alt

Well I installed the new alt. I upgraded the wires to 4 gauge and added a 250 amp fuse. Things were working fine for ~ 10 miles then the fuse blew. I was cranking the stereo pretty hard. I don't know if that’s why it blew. I can’t find 250 amp fuses here locally, so I ordered a 250 amp circuit braker.
Anyway, cars dead again ... for now.

Re: It's time for a high output alt

Check your wiring. The fuse shouldn't "Just blow". Make sure you're not shorting somewhere.
