Subs where rear seats are...

I just had a question about putting my subs where the rear bucket seats are. I will be doing the rear seat delete here shortly and will be making it flush with the trunk area. Then I want to sink the subs down into the bucket part where the seats were. I've went through a lot of posts and pics, and I have a question. What kind of preperation should I do under the rear seat area? Would it be okay to just clean everything and apply some sound deadening material, then go ahead and install my mdf board and set the subs in? Or should I try to fiberglass the contour of what was under the rear seats, then attach it to the mdf, and then set it into place? I kinda wanted to stay away from fiberglassing, but I don't want to cause any damage to anything or have the subs sound like crap.

So would it be safe to mount the subs with the sound deadening material only? Will I cause damage to any of the wires or blow out any of those grommets under the rear seat area?

Suggestions welcome.

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

if the subs are free air you should be ok. If not, the glass first and attach the MDF would be the way to do it.

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

They are not free air. So is there a way to seal off the compartments for the subs without fiberglassing? Could I just trim some wood to fit the contours of the seat bottom and then put some thin weatherstripping under it and set it all down and screw it into place. I wonder if that would seal good enough...?

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

you can use mdf to the contour of the bottom and to seal it you could use caulk or silicone. i think that should seal it. and when your doing this you should make a how to with measurments. i want to do this soon.

umm..that would be interesting. Not sure you'd have the air space needed for your subs doing that..

if you dont want to make a fiberglass box (which i think would be the best since it contours the bottom perfectly) i would make a Whole box out of mdf for the subs then you can trim out the sides and other areas with wood.

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

problem with making a box is that the area is so small, trying to make a box to go flush with the trunk is gonna be small, and unless you dont want a deep sound, id go with fiberglass to maximize the air space.

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

Yeah, I figured fiberglassing would be the strongest, and give me the best air space and sound. But I've already got a couple fiberglass subwoofer boxes that I custom made to fit the trunk "wheel well" spaces, and it was a hassle and takes longer to make than i really have time for. I can, just barely fit my 12" subs in how i am discussing in this thread, but the recommended air space is about 1.25 cu ft each, and i would probably only have about .75.

I guess I have to do a little more thinking, huh? I just wanted something that was more practical with more storage space, and I wanted to sink the subs in and make it look clean as well, and try to stay away from fiberglass.

Edit: I suppose I may be able to raise up the trunk area an inch or two, which would also raise up my rear seat area the same amount. That would allow for a better fit and more air space. Any other suggestions? I will definately take pictures if i decide on what i want to do.

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

how about cutting your MDF board to fit over the area then just fiberglass the sides. It wont take as long i guess?

Re: Subs where rear seats are...

Okay, I figured out what i am gonna do. I started on it and I am taking pictures as I go. I won't be able to finish it for about a week. So I will post everything up when I'm done.
