protecting subs?

I'm looking for ideas/suggestions on alternatives to using speaker grilles to protect subs from rogue trunk stuff.
I don't want to use grilles like these (mostly because I think they are tacky/ugly)

I have seen alot of other's done without anything covering the subs, but I do still plan to use my trunk for whatever, so don't want to worry about groceries sliding against them.

I've looked at some bar type grilles that I am leaning toward like these

or these

also have considered something like these, but the ones I've seen in person didn't impress me - even though they are cast alumn, come off with a plasticy look (at least the kicker ones - haven't seen this particular pioneer grille).

Am I missing any other obvious options? maybe just positioning the subs well enough that they would be out of the way of typical trunk stuff maybe?

Re: protecting subs?

looks like you got all the options covered... except for a custom job of course.
You can usually pick up a sub guard on ebay. they are usually high impact plastic so it should do the job.

And its almost impossible IMO to place the subs where it will be out of the way in the trunk.

Re: protecting subs?

kicker ones are good tho, they are made of metal and are pretty damn sturdy so you wont have to worry too much with them.
andddd you could color match it if you got bored :-)

Re: protecting subs?

Like jameson said most kicker subwoofers have matching grills that go over the sub. The comp vrs have them and for L7s which are square in shape they also have guards as well. And i think audiobahn subwoofers have matchin grills as well.

Re: protecting subs?

yeah - my subs are the kicker comp that do have matching grills - but they are very chunky (and $50+ for the pair), so thought the metal bar kinda ones would be less heavy (visually speaking).
my dad commented that he thought the bar style ones would still leave too much of the speaker un covered and available to be damaged. anyone have thoughts on that?

Re: protecting subs?

here are some more for your consideration.

As far as stuff getting between the bars...
What are you planning on putting back there in your trunk, Goldie?

Re: protecting subs?

Those are some nice options, when I bought my subs, the one had the dust cap dented in, is there anyway to get that out?

Re: protecting subs?

its just cosmetic...but you can try sticking a duct tape on there and slowly pulling it out.

Did you get them in Gold?? I think those will work fine, if it is just stuff like bags of groceries I think those would protect the sub if a bag "slides" into it....as long as you don't put any long sharp objects in your trunk I think you will be fine.
