View Full Version : Advice on LOWERING Rev Limiter

I have decided what to do with one of the banks on my chip. No bashing please.

I want to lower my rev limiter so I can bounce it off at a lower rpms instead of maxing out the rpms to hit the cut off. Umm... I guess you can say like the video game gran turismo, when you hit the gas before starting the race. :cover:

I'm not sure how the rev limiter works so need advice on what to set the gas / spark limiters at.

I want to do it safely so I don't hurt the engine, so let me know if it may cause issues. I used to do it to my old 2.5 on purpose and never had any issues.

4000 rpms sounds like a good starting point.

I know the contours rev out at about 4K rpms when in park or neutral. Dont know if you could maybe find the code they run or whatever to help you out.. Sorry if this has nothign to do with what your asking.

Are you thinking along the lines of a 2-step launch system?

There is a rev limit for neutral and there is a table of rev imiting versus torque output. I also know it is able to be setup as a two-stage limiter with the stock code.
The rev-limit versus torque seems like it could be fun to play with.

Its more of a "entertaining" effect I'm going for. I don't know anything about the "two stage" launching. That sounds interesting too.

I will have the dyno tune done on one bank of the chip and the same tune done on a second bank with the lowered limiters so I can switch it to the "limited" at will. Punch the gas and hear the soothing sound of the engine cutting out with out entering the higher rpms.

What would be the best way to go about and doing this? And is it safe for the engine.

The dyno guys will be doing the settings since I don't have the PRP. Wish I did, but can't spring for it or a wide band O2 right now.

could also be useful if the car s ever valeted so that no one gets to much joy out of joy riding your car if you happen to get a ****ty valet

I thought about that too. But in a more of a keep ME under control way, since I cant afford a valet.

On a side not I'm waiting for tuners to start advertising tunes for teenage drivers that have lowered speed limiters and rev limiters. I think it would be a big hit for some parents, if price is right.

the Parents can get the the chip installed for 200 that monitors there kids driving for them. if you want to lower your rev limiter trade in your car for a ford Aspire.

I tried with the xcal to lower the speed and rev limit but it doesnt work...

maybe you need to rethink your approach to lower the rev limiter hint hint.

Theres this new invention called the shift light. Have you considered getting one??

A shift light would do nothing to help him with the question he's asking.

I think you are missing the whole point of what I want to do here. I want to lower my limiter so I can hold gas to floor and hit the rev limiter constantly, for say 30-40 secs. I want a lower limiter so I don't stress out my engine at 7k rpms while doing it.

Ok here is what i did to raise my rev limiter.(to lower it you would just decrease the numbers)

Open the Advantage software and open the tune you want to modify. Go to the first section "scalars" and open up the subsection "rev/speed limiter" section. For the "Minimum_pip_period_V6" set it to 0. Then go to "rev_limit_0_on" and set it to your desired number, mine is set to 7250. Go down to "rev_limit_neutral_0_on" and set it to where you want the rev limiter to be when the car is in neutral, mine is set to 7250. Next set the "rev_limit_torque_off" and "rev_limit_torque_on" to where you want the rev limiter to be.

Now exit back out to the "main menu" on the Advantage screen. Go down to the section called "Rev/speed limiter". Select the "rev_limit_RPM_vs_torque" subsection. Once you get to this screen set all the values in the right hand column to 1. This is needed in order to let the ECU use the scalar limiters.

This is what i did, with some help from Ryan @ SCT, to get my ECU to change the rev limiters.

If you have any problems after doing this just post up the question and we'll see what we can do from there.

Sounds easy. Thanks.
