well i have a blown motor. and i will be getting hold of a new/used one in the near future. unfortunatly i dont quite have the expertise to do a whole engine change. i cant give a set date on when i will have the new motor available to me but i was just wondering if anyone would be willing to lend me a hand. i should have all the necesary tools minus a torque wrench. but i will try to get hold of one of those too. if there are any special tools i need then i probably wont have them.
if you could let me know if you are intersted in giving me a hand. it would be very much appreciated. and i will let you know on a set date.
thanks
mike

You have access to a garage of some kind? to keep the rain off of everyone? and you will need to rent an engine hoist. an engine stand or some 2x4s to build something will be helpfull or even a good big work bench.
What do you plan to do just a strait 2.5 swap? probably the cheapest and easiest. Though a 3L isnt that much more work.
Be prepared... some of the required parts for this swap arent cheap ...100 bucks here and there adds up fast. Mostly gaskets and the Head Bolts. And if you have an MTX with a decent ammount of miles on the clutch its really worth replacing it as long as the engine and tranny are out.
Anyway im not sure of my schedule either with class starting. Myself and Slurpee did Tads in a LONG weekend as a strait 2.5 swap. But everything has to go perfect. Reagan lives near you ... not exactly a world renowned mechanic but he might come lend a hand ;) ... Might talk some others into it if you try.

the coug is in my garage right now. i should have access to an engine hoist so no problem there. im not too bothered about putting the old one on a stand because its just plain broken. depending how the new one comes in it might be on a pallet or something. not sure about that yet.
its going to be a straight swap with a motor i will be buying off a member here. im not too bothered about the clutch. i think after this the car will be sold and the money just isnt worth it. atleast IMO.
i would sell the car as a shell with blown motor but i believe i can get more for it with it running.

Not sure how to say this, so ill be frank ... not sure im going to drive 5 hours to help a guy swap an engine so he can sell it.
Ive done 2 swaps in the past for members who planned on staying with us.

understandable. i dk. ive got alot to think think about. i love the coug. theres no other way to explain it. but at the same time all it has done for me is break. and dont get me wrong, i dont plan on selling andleaving. the cougar is just too great to let go of. if tho i did sell it iwould get another one without a doubt. like ive been looking at other cars and i have drove some. nothing matches. i just need a more reliable cougar. this one was beat to **** by the previous owner and i did not know that until i got it. if i can get the money for engine and clutch tho. for sure its staying with me. if i cant get the clutch...thers gonna be alot of thinking.

if youve got the right equipment i can lend a hand if its the right weekend. What member are you getting the motor from?

getting it from jrak123. i should have all the right equipment minus any special tools that are needed for odd things.

I'd be happy to give a hand as long as there's plenty of food and alcohol

ok. thats great. im glad you guys want to help out. now i just have to get the engine and i will let you guys know. and basically i will prettymuch revolve around when you can come and help out. because as long as it gets done im just happy with that. haha.
is there any specific tools i will need to do this? so i can start getting hold of them.
thanks

A definite necessity is a 3/8ths torque wrench... but some one might be able to bring one.

I am willing to to give morale support if you like! :) My favorite part of cougar meets is socializing.

well even if the heads are on... theres the tranny bolt up, oil pan, timing cover, .... guess you dont really need it for the valve covers but they recomend it.
Always seemed a good idea to me on any bolt you cant easily get to later.
MercCoug99

tranny bolt up 25-34 ft/lbs
oil pan 15-22 ft/lbs (25-34 ft/lbs on the tranny bolts
timing cover 15-22 ft/lbs
nothing thats really impossible to judge on how tight it is.
i dk though. ive never done an engine swap before. ive done a trans though.
im pretty sure i will need to get hold of some quick disconnects for the fuel rail. am i right in thinking that?
any others?

ok. so when i get backin town i am going to start prepping my carfor the swap and will be ordering the engine. what i need to know is if the trans is coming out too or just the engine
thanks

its easiest to pull the entire engine/tranny together... and if you have access to air tools you will be blessed.
MercCoug99

air tools as in impact wrench and air ratchet?
Crispy

yes, it all depends on what your going to be doing -- you might need to remove half shalfs and whatnot.. depends on who is doing it and what plan of attack they want to go -- also some of the bolts are going to be pretty damned rusted - especially any of the exhaust bolts under the car

Air tools help but are not a must.
Yes the half shafts are coming off im sure, and the tranny and engine come out as one.

mmmk. sounds good. well i know for a fact most of my exhaust bolts can come right off. im not sure about the headers though. i will be letting you guys know once i have an engine to drop in and we can set a date around what days you can come help.
thanks
Moraki

The headers stay on the engine till it is outside the car.... they are easy as hell to do then.

How'd I miss this thread? I'm nearby, and if all those people are willing to drive, hell, I can drive 15 minutes. :) 'course... Doug wasn't kidding when he said I wasn't a world reknown mechanic... I've got pretty programming fingers... and have no idea how to swap an engine... but I'll come up for what I can.

nice. thanks. all i have to do now is forward Jrak money for the parts and in about 2-3 weeks i should have the engine sitting in my garage.
So sometime around then i should be ready to go.
Tomorrow i am going to start prepairing the engine to be taken out because i have to move some of the componants over to the new motor. So im going to spend more time taking out my alt now than doing it when the block is out but i just feel like working on something. haha

ok. so here is an update. i just got availability to a neighbors, brothers shop. its about 2 miles south of me (geneva) on route 25 IIRC. now i know i wont ahve the engine this coming weekend because Jason will be out of toen. im pressuming hamil fest. so hopfully the weekend after i should be able to pick up the engine. so anytime after that i shuold be starting on the swap.
if you are still interested in lending a hand, anytime after the weekend of the 16th im hoping, let me know so i can find a weekend i can do this and meet some fellow necoers
thanks

sounds great, keep us posted.
you may want to ask jason if he is planning on attending excelciers meet the weekend of the 16th [which would probably mean he wont be availible that weekend either].
