sup guys, im from anchorage, ak and i got a 99 s10 xtreme shaved, lowered 4/5 and ive been happy with it for the last year and half. but i think i want something different and i always liked the last gen of the cougar. basically wat im looking at getting is a an 00-02 cougar with a manual and then getting a decent body kit for it, lowering it an inch or so, shave the doors and lambo them, turbo it and some other stuff. that is the basic idea wat i got from looking at the cougar initially. wat do you guys normally do with the the 2.5 powerplant? does it have support from svt or anything? im from the world of custom trucks so nothing is really too crazy for me. thanks.

First off, Hello- Welcome to the boards.
Second- There are several FAQs and other "sticky" threads that you'll want to read through regarding upgrades to the powerplant in the Cougar.
Good luck with the turbo- There are no kits anymore- You'd need a custom kit, unless you go Thomas Knight S/C.
As for the powerplant? Upgrade to the 3.0L Duratec. More tq and hp over the SVT engine. Parts swap- Check the SVT Upgrades sticky.

i looked at that 3.0 swap and looks like a piece of cake but i would like to keep it emissions legal atleast for the moment. i have no problem piecing together a custom kit, i hope someone makes turbo manifolds tho. do they make turbo kits that will work with the 3.0 swap in these? thanks for being gentle, haha

He must have finally realized that he car goes really fast... Thats one hell of a turb lag tho... Welcome to the boards.... and definetly swap over to a 3 liter.

im looking at the svt parts swap and doesnt look too hard, would u guys recommend a port and polish on teh heads while they are off? or is the cost not worth the benefit.
Emissions is even better with the 3L- It has slightly higher compression and burns cleaner.
P&P would be a plus while you have the heads off since port matching is the way to go unless you like fabricating fuel rails, EGR, and IACV systems to use the 3L UIM/LIM...

at this point the 3L is outta the question since the emissions up here wouldnt allow me to drive it during the winter.
Woah- Stop. What part of "it burns cleaner" was a problem? Keep your main cat in-place (you can even remove the pre-cats in favor of headers) and still pass the strict emissions of Northern VA- I know folks have passed CA emissions, too. As long as the main cat is in place.

Yup, listen to this guy, he's an EXPERT in 3L.
On a serious note, listen to what Dan has to say, the man knows his stuff. If you do choose to swap engines, you're a fool to go with the more fragile, less powerful, more expensive SVT engine.
As for a 3L, you can do anything from a basic engine swap to going buck-wild with it. Anything that works on a 2.5L will work even better on a 3L. Do a lot of searching and a lot of reading, there is a RIDICULOUS amount of good information on this board, and another good place to frequent is www.contour.org as the Contour is a sister car to the Cougar.

thanks for the break down on emissions but your laws arent the same as mine. we arent allowed to swap in a nonfactory option motor into a vehicle. i had to go through this with every1 when i wanted to swap an ls1 in my s10.

If he did the 3.0L/2.5L hybrid wouldn't it look just like the stock 2.5? Just thinking this might be an option.

2.5L and 3L blocks are the exact same size . . . I'm pretty sure the only possible way anyone would be able to tell is if they tore the engine down and measured the cylinder bore . . .
There's a "3.0L" stamp in the center of the block. Try finding it while the thing's in the car, I dare you.

Yeah I would SERIOUSLY doubt any ford tech would even notice that a cougar had a 3.0 swap into it.
With the 2.5L intake manifolds the two engines look identical. (assuming you use the 2.5L valve covers) hehe.

I heard that A.B.C. was workin on a turbo 4 a newer model cat but that it didnt have an available intercooler or anything I didnt think my 2.5 could handle 1 like that unless it wasent a good turbo by tha way how much would a Duratec 3.0 cost cause I was just gonna bore mine out n put cobra svt racing pistons n heads

well since its an obdII they pretty much just do a quick visual inspection and then plug it into the port and read the ECM. wouldnt it show up a 3.0l ecm?

Thats good, go talk to someone who has NO FREAKING CLUE what the crap you're babbling about and ignore the advice of people who have years of experience with the platform.
With a proper tune, the stock ECU will be retained with either a chip attached (not part of inspection, you'd have to climb up under to see) or a reprogram of the stock ECU (as in my case).

Sounds like you two could be related Ryan
As DanG stated if it is tuned properly it will pass inspection. In your searching you will find out various options for tuning. Also if you get an '01-'02 the ECU has adaptive learning. As long as you don't go totally nuts with the 3L build you can get by for a while without even tuning *IF and only IF* you stick with the stock injectors and MAF. THe O2 sensors and knock sensor will take care of the rest.

Really? I didnt know if you had a 01 or 02 u could still use the factory ecu...will the gains still be the same? Pretty much i jus have to swap out the block and a couple accessories on my 01 correct?

Yup, that's definately the way to make friends here.
Listen man, we know what we're talking about, a lot of us have gone down this road (including emissions testing). I don't give a crap what the emissions tester is telling you, because while it won't be legal in their eyes (because its got a swap) there is NO WAY for them to tell, period. No *****ing about it, they cannot tell, its not like a Civic swap, or an "LS1 in an S-10" -- these engines are identical.
