The precats are gone but everything else is stock I was wondering if a test pipe would make any difference in sound and/or performance?

What do you think?

yes it will make a big difference on sound. it becomes obscenely loud [in a very unpleasant way] because the cat section isnt there to act as a resonator. also it kinda feels like all your tourqe has been converted to noise [IE it killed low end power].

I put one on my car earlier this year [all cats gutted, pacesetters catback], and it sucked and I immediately took it off.

I later ended up installing an msds ypipe and I cant tell you how much the quited the car [at least at idling to pull in and out of the driveway]. I then went back and reinstalled the test pipe and the exhaust was suddenly tolerable [it'll still scream like a banshie at open throttle but is pretty civilized with light gas].

ya without an optimized ypipe [to provided a pulse point], it makes it loud as ****

I just installed a Trubendz catalyst "test" pipe this morning.

My precats are gutted. I have a true Borla, single exit exhaust. Unlike most aftermarket exhaust systems, the true Borla single exit catback has two, straight through mufflers located in the same positions as the stock mufflers occupied.

Before installing the test pipe, the car was close to stock quiet with only a slight growl. After installing the pipe, maybe a 10-20% increase in loudness with no highway drone. Not very loud at all but, it's there.

By comparison, the car was louder with ungutted precats, secondary catalyst installed, and the rear stock muffler removed (only the front stock muffler was used). Nice growl with no drone but, louder than the current setup.

Again, this is with a two muffler catback system so, those single muffler systems may be as loud as discussed above.

The Borla actually has a muffler and a resonator and believe me the resonator makes a huge difference in sound. I have a test pipe installed now, I'm buying a high flow cat to install since it's just getting on my nerves. I don't like loud exhausts, plus I feel guilty about the whole environment thing.

Ok so my understanding is that a test pipe on a stock exhaust would sound louder but sound like crap.

To bad Borla catback aren't available anymore ....

Ebay/For Sale section is your friend. My exhaust was still quieter then soldier's and all he had was a flowmaster. No lie.

Get a Borla catback from TruBendz, you'll love the sound.

How does $252 (plus about $50 UPS ground shipping - FL to MI) for a true Borla, all stainless steel, double muffler, single exit catback directly from Borla grab you? It even includes directions and hardware! That's cheaper than a Trubendz aluminized steel clone!

The 1999 advertised on the Borla site (link below) will fit all 1999 through 2002, 2.5L Cougars without modification to car or exhaust. By the way, the drawing on their website shows the exhaust exiting the right rear of the vehicle. The diagram is wrong and it exits the left rear just like the OEM.

I'm surprised more people haven't snatched this up yet.

The things is that when you do a search on the site for the V6 Cougar the result says Borla doesn't have anything for the Cougar...... :goofy:

Well it is defenatly interesting but I live in Quebec, Canada so shipping is a problem and customs to I found a local store that caries Borla products I'll give them a call sometimes.

Ship it to someone in the upper states, install it there. Drive back into Canada.

Just post in one of the states forums and ask if they'd be willing to help you out. Just be careful and make sure it's someone you can trust, aka someone that's been here a while and is well known.

Does it really cost that much more for shipping/customs? I think a Trubendz stainless steel single exit is like $500 so, by comparison you still might be a winner with the real Borla?

I would double check this to be sure! I mean, what happend to NAFTA/CAFTA?
