I'm not sure what happened ... the domain was showing active in PLESK. I simply nosed around the Plesk panel and turned things off and back on and it seems to have work

It may have been part of the backup routine. In order to backup the website, the site must be disabled, then backed up and then enabled again. This is all supposed to happen automatically ... perhaps there was a hickup during the re-enabeling portion of the routine?

Yeah, from the looks of what I could see the server wasn't responding to requests for the domain. Prob just an apache hiccup. :D

And why would you go to newcougar.com when the site for New Cougar owners is newcougar.org ?

next host should be "dreamhost"... they are awesome

DreamHost has horrible mySQL response times because of the overloaded servers. Adding a site as large as this on there would kill the box, and put response time into the toilet.

The only hosts that will be able to handle this site and its large bandwidth requirements would be something along the lines of a 1st Tier host, NTT/Verio, Rackspace, etc. All of these 3rd Tier hosts are crap for a site as large as this.

Thus why I went with GoDaddy ... VPS for a good price with good support.

Ah yeah, dedicated they are good, since they do have the bandwidth -- its just the overloaded shared servers (which most hosts suffer from, as well). I haven't used GoDaddy as a provider before myself, but I've heard good things about them thus far. How've they been for you, Trevor?

E1Great. However, since it's a VPS account, the entire box is in your hands. If you submit a help ticket for a configuration issue that is your fault, they basically tell you to fix it yourself or they will charge you to fix it upon approval. So, I had to teach myself some Unix shell commands and make some configuration changes when I first set up the box. Understandable, but frustrating having to teach yourself a completely foreign OS.

If ya need some UNIX help, just lemme know. I was the lead admin for Symantec and L-3, and managed hundreds of UNIX flavours across many boxes... Plus I manage my own dedicated servers for all of my web projects, and I have a monster Fedora 5 test server at the house.

The server these boards is running on is a rather old release ... Fedora Core 2. I purchased the account in December of last year. All new accounts are on Fedora Core 4 boxes now. Would it be worth the trouble of me migrating again in December to a new account and not renewing this account?

EternalOne

Do they still update the Fedora 2 box? If so, then there really shouldn't be much difference between the two sets, one was loaded with Fedora 2 and upgraded to the level of Fedora 5, where-as the other was loaded straight as Fedora 5. I don't see why they'd stop updates, since they would be much better having the latest security releases and updates on their servers. Then again, VPS accounts are a bit funky like that sometimes. lol...

If you haven't had apache updates since Fedora 2, then yes, definately migrate, or talk to them about updates. The apache core is always updated and new stuff is fixed/added all the time, good stuff usually, too. ;)

mmm fedora

Haha, I know man. I was an old school SunOS guy back in the day, pre-Solaris, and then I moved into BSD world for quite awhile. Getting back into a SysV-based system rocks, and while things have been a bit slow I've finally got the server where I want it. :D

Dual Raid-5 arrays running Seagate Cheetah SCSI-3 devices for a total of 1TB of drive space.
Dual 2ghz procs
4GB of RAM (needs more!)
3 NIC's
3 power supplies

One helluva box for home-use... If anyone wants some test apache accounts I can setup an SSH account for ya to test with. =)
