Im new to this forum but Im coming from NECO just to throw that out there....ANYWAYS...here the situation

I have an '02 Cougar 2.5L...The engine seized and I now want to swap in a 2.0 Zetec with future plans on turbocharging...I have a guy all ready who said he will do it, but he just needs to know what, if any, modifications need to be done to swap in the 2.0 into a car that had the 2.5. Thanks all!

the engine mounts arent the same, its possible, but it would take a loooooong time.

Your best bet would probably be to find a Zetec Cougar at a salvage yard with a complete front end you can rob parts from.

A very incomplete list would include transmission (pretty sure the bellhousing is different, even though it is still MTX-75), subframe, ECU, probably wiring harness, at least part of the exhaust system (no y pipe)....

I would swap in the 3L Its gonna give you more power and its a LOT cheaper, and it is a direct swap

good choice on wanting to switch to the zetec. it has a ton of potential. if i still had the cougar, and had a choice between the zetec or 3L, I definately woulda done zetec. yeah, it will take a bit more work since the bellhousing on the tranny is different, and the motor mounts are different, but if you can, like wade said, get some parts from a junkyard, it shouldn't be too bad at all.

Unfortunatly I dont know that I have the time to find all these parts..So ill just probably swap in the 2.5 SVT or something for the little extra power. I know this engine swaps directly in with no work. I noticed when searching on car-parts.com for the SVT motor, they gave me the choice of 2 SVT motors with 2 different engine stamps on them...You may know what im trying to say..Does it matter whcih one I chose...I stillwant to turbo though after I put in an SVT motor..

well if your serious about the zetec, I would recommend also searching through CEG [contour.org]. they have a hella lot more zetec's and could probably give you a more definitive list.

2004 Escape 3.0 engine to my knowledge swaps right in... if your gunna be in there go 3.0

EDIT: swaps with some modding... but easier than others

The 3 liters are not exactly a "direct swap", so please stop putting up false information.

Depending on which engine the 3.0 comes out of, there are mods that have to be made to it. Valve covers, timing cover, rear bushing, etc. Not to mention tuning for the injectors and the remove the IMRC if you do a straight swap.

editted.. thanks waders

i was looking to do the reversial of what u want to do 2L-3L and it doesnt make sence..to much in major parts( it came out to a very high cost build)
plus if u put the zetec in u would still have to do some work on it to get it to the numbers u want

1. subframe
2. radiator + plumbing
3. wireing harness
4. motor mounts
5. transmition( bellhousing is different)
6. intake
7. exhuast
8 new chip

thats just off the top of my head wat it would take to do any transfer fom engine to engine outside of the 2.5 -3L your best bet like mentioned is the 3L.

engne mounts and subframe are the same (the sde) mounts are dff though

lol doing a 3.0 sure as hell is more like a 'direct swap' vs a 2.0.

Just out of curiosity. What zetec are you putting in? Will it be built for boost? how much will the motor alone cost you?

If you do a search, you'd discover that there's a damn good possibility that the idea that you have to swap your subframe is wrong.

According to what another member searched for, there are only two subframes listed for the Cougar-

Subframe for ATX
Subframe for MTX

That's it. They don't list one specifically for a particular motor.

You may want to call Ford and ask what they have listed as options for replacement front subframes on a Cougar, both 2.0 and 2.5L

If they only have two part numbers, and you have a 2.5L MTX and want to swap in a 2.0L MTX, I think it will work out just fine. :)

If you want to go turbo, you'll be better off with a 3.0L, modded to fit, with turbo.

Otherwise you can go the easier route for a nice power boost and go with a 2.5L SVT/3L hybrid (2.5L heads, SVT intake cams, 3L exhaust cams from a Mazda 6 IIRC, and 3L block). Your 02 heads should swap on with no modification, as the 01/02 heads have the extra galleys/return that the 3L block has..

Do a search though, I don't remember if I'm 100% correct on this one.

the svt hybrid would be bad due to the high compression with the 3l pistons no?

Did anyone read my previous post??

The Front and rear roll resistors are the same bt the side mounts are different.

Same subframe.

i would have to say that the zetec would be easier to boost and would probably make better power and yes high compression pistons and boost bad idea trust me i know

Ness1216

Depends on the eng. The s2000 eng runs 11:1 comp. revs to 9k and can boost up to 10psi on stock motor.

I can also build you a 3L ready to drop in if you are interested in going that route. PM me if you are interested.

jwheels54

yes that is correct and i was boosting 10psi on 10.25:1 compression in my focus but if you drop the compression you can raise the boost and add more timing making for a lot safer and more powerful motor

jwheels54
08-10-2006, 12:08 PM
if your running high compression the best power adder that you can do is nitrous. N2O doesn't affect high compression motors like boost does
