I am looking to replace my computer in my 99 Cougar. Does anyone make a performance computer?

what modifications do you have to your car to warrant tuning?

My car has a Torsen differential, a second stage clutch, and a superchip from Superchips. Also it has a WR intake and a mass air meter modification. Reason I am asking is becuz my ECU is on the fritz and would like to replace it with a aftermarket programmable ECU for the future use of a Vortec supercharger and NOS.:)

"it just is!"
seriously though.. lol

if your ECU is actually on the "fritz" then pick up another stock ECU of the same code and be done. Pick up and SCT chip or X-CAL later down the road when you add more mods.

This thread is dumb so I'm gonna put it to rest.
No. Noone makes a performance computer for our car. There are several companies that make piggy back programs that will work in our car if you know what you are doing. I assume you don't so stay away from them.
Best way to tune these cars is to have a SCT chip put in which takes control of the ecu and makes changes or use the X-cal which erases the stock ecu and puts a new program in it. You have no reason to do either right now.
You say your computer is on the "fritz" which doesn't make much sense since the computer is software and usually works or doesn't work. If you are having issues you should post in another section. The problem could be the chip you put in causing issues.

All but a couple replies made this thread dumb, hopefully mine wasn't one of them. ;)

Dont you need a tune when you make a mass air flow mod.

You all suck!!! All you ricers think about is how COOL you might be. I know more about cars that were around before you probably were born than these pieces of crap that are all computer controled.
Now to put the matter to rest. My PCM/ECU/brains of the dump was in fact shot. I sent the Superchip off to be tested and came back acting normal. I had to get a computer from Ford for $468 plus hour of labor for install and programming fees so that it would actually run the piece of crap.
In the mean time I have been driving a barely legal 10 sec Camaro that would kill any of your pathetic rides. I just wanted to make all you cry-babies not use cubes as a excuse for loosing your rides. By the by I won the Cougar I own. Some dumb kid layed the pink down on his first ride before he knew what he was racing!

I'm planning on trying a Megasquirt setup on the cougar. It's pretty sweet, but it's not the most user friendly setup. It doesn't come pretuned, and I've yet to find anyone who has used one on a Duratec V6 yet, but this thing can run pretty much anything. All it takes is someone with the patients and the know-how to make it work. One of my wife and I's sponsors for our 87 AE86 sells these systems and is hooking us up with one to tune the 20 valve that is going in it. Check out their website at http://www.DIYautotune.com
Theses systems are alot cheaper than most other standalone systems, but have COUNTLESS sucess stories. And with the Megasquirt you can eliminate the MAF and run open ITB's if you make a set. It also gives you the ability to upgrade and add other options later down the road. You can run a wasted spark setup, or even COP. Got a car with a distributor? There are multiple ways that you can use this system and change the car over to EDIS.

alot of people use megasquirt in turbo'd first generation neons. it pretty much does away with the factory computer. a few people have 95-99 neons pushing over 400hp or neons with the srt 4 engine swapped in them, using megasquirt to control everything. its not a bad program if you know how to tune or can find a shop that works with it.

Actually the Megasquirt also has an option to run your stock ECU when you head over to the emissions places. It's very easy to tune I've used it on my Cougar, My friends rides, wrx, satrun ion, mr2 turbo, and RX-7.

i'm sorry i can't let this one go... If your such a streetracing god then why did you go to the ford dealership to get your new ecu installed. Go back to mullet town and finish growing out your mullet. Than marry your first cousin and make love to one of your exhaust pipes...Than put flames all over your camaro, and pretend that it catches fire when you drive it fast. Moron.. Lets see a timeslip, douchebag. And if you're so knowledgeable about cars, why didn't you just go pick up an ECU off a junk Cougar, have the car towed to a stealership and pay the re-keying fee which is like $50?

I would guess there are no time slips b/c i highly doubt his car is in the 10's unless he has NAWS on that little head/cam 350. Even then the stock rear end would not last more than a few runs. Although maybe there is more done than listed on his cardomain site.

Yea, the megasquirt is a good system. I like it because you can set it up on your N/A motor, and then later if you want to boost, you can just up the fuel on your fuel maps and reset your timing tables. And for those wanting big boost, DIYautotune has a 4 bar "Map Daddy" MAP sensor. I've seen some people leave the factory computer installed to control things like cruise control.
Hey TrackCat you still got your maps for tuning the cougar with Megasquirt?

seriously though. Ditch the superchips and get the SCT Xcal2 with PRP if you want full tunibilty of this platform.
Additionally, if you really want to make some good power on this platform dont waste your money on the s/c just yet. Look into doing a 3.0 swap and then s/c that engine. the 3.0 responsed MUCH better to mods and will ulitmately yeild much better results.

Not that this appears to be on topic as of late BUT.... Has anyone considered the Mega Squirt stand alone? It has proven tunability and relaiability with nitrous, and about any form of positive manifold pressure, and has seen great gains on stock N/A cars. Just my .02

I had my set up done about a year ago running nitrous on my cougar. I need to get my maps back from my friends Laptop. I used his laptop and we went to the dyno after the EFI course. I was pleased with the results but since last week when the storm hit Chicago a BIG piece of tree fell on my car and I had to take everything out so my insurance doesn't see what I have been up to. What is your set up on your car Mods list

TrackCat: As of right now, the car I plan to use it on has very little done to it. It's my wifes Cougar, But I'm thinking of trying to set up a megasquirt on it while putting the new goodies in. It be nice to have a base map and tables to start with. Saves ALOT of time.

While I'm with you in principle that the guy is a complete moron who posted about his camaro, I can't let it get this is a public forum and even people who don't register here can read this stuff. So keep it a bit cleaner.
