View Full Version : Extrude Honed UIM Improvements

I have an '01 cougar and purchased the UIM from a 99 cougar that has been Max Extrude Honed. While i've got the UIM and the LIM basically apart, is there anything else that I can optimize on the UIM or LIM to get (probably minimal) gains in HP or airflow? Also, is there going to be a need to do anything special to get the '99 UIM to match to the '01 LIM?

Thanks!

(Kinda excited since this is the first real mod i've done with my car)

The LIM are all the same from 5/99 and up. But they all bolt up anyway, just the ports are bigger.

Alright, I thought the '01 LIMs were SVT Spec and somehow inexplicably different (most likely thats the larger ports you were talking about).

Should I have the '99 spec UIM port matched to the '01 LIM, or would the different be nominal?

*Sorry if my questions sound n00bish, but I figured the only bad question is the one not asked (and the one not properly searched for )

you should not have to do anything to your EH'd UIM for it to line up with the lower intake manifold. bolt 'em up and go!

I concur captain

Excellent! Thanks for the quick responses! I shall bolt it on and enjoy the benefits! Not sure what to expect, but it couldn't hurt anything.

One final question is, since it's not the SVT UIM, it's just the regular UIM thats been extrude honed, do I still use an SVT UIM gasket? or the regular UIM gasket?

I believe you use a regular gasket.

max honing doesnt change the actual port sides.

While doing some more research on this project I came across this information in a different thread regarding the UIMs.

"The SVT UIM aside from being honed has bigger channels and a wider TB opening allowing for more air, coupled with the GMK which gives the engine air of temperature of about HALF of what a short ram sucks in allows the engine to burn fuel more efficient and provide you with more ponies

The SVT TB is also 10MM bigger than the stock one, and has a roll-over or unwinding linkage as compared to the stocks pull linkage... this allows the linkage to better work the butterfly and enables intake to provide much better airflow"

Maybe I dont understand the differences, but after being Max Extrude honed, the '99 UIM should have the same or bigger channels then the SVT UIM as well as a same TB opening, and the ATX cougars have the same TB cable as the SVT TB.

The only difference between an EH UIM and the SVT UIM is the SVT UIM is port matched to the '01 and up LIM?

If your going to replace the UIM i would pick up a SVT TB too. They proved great throttle response and give you some more hp. You will need the SVT bracket and cable, all that info is in the 2.5L SVT Upgrade sticky.

I'll be getting the SVT throttle body, and bracket. Shouldn't need the cable since my ATX '01 cougar has it (from what i've read on the forums). I just want to make sure i'm not missing anything and that i'm doing this as well as it can be done, lol.

The only thing that has me concerned is that if the SVT LIM has larger openings (not sure what they are called) and the SVT UIM are matched to those openings, wont using a non-SVT EH'd UIM, while providing overall better flow, still be restriced by not being matched to those larger openings? Thats really all I dont understand at this point.

You're splitting hairs here.

It kicks the holy bejeezus out of anything that was on thre before. If you start making enough horsepower to worry about thouusandths of a second in the quarter mile, then start worrying about port sizes.

Bolt it on and go, for crying out loud.

I honestly don't know if an extrude honed uim's port diameter are as big as an svt. That's why I just went with an svt. I think that's what you're asking.

Like Andy said though, it's better then what you have now.

The SVT spec one and your 01 LIM are the SAME size.

The ports on the EH UIM are the same size as an SVT UIM. I measured them right after i got it. Also...before i sent it off i opened the mouth of the UIM up as much as i could and still leave material for the gasket to seal good so that will be no problem. I think i measured the opening to be 64 or 65mm.

Sorry If i'm worrying about something that is a non-important aspect, I just wanted to do it right the first time, thats all, not trying to ask dumb questions or anything.

Thanks again for the help you guy's have been!

Hi Krushgr00ve; stick to your guns. Port matching and optimization of airways is essential. It is the key to gaining maxium power from this engine. If you can do it or someone can do it for you, depending on cost...have it done..BigG
